Building a "budget" long range rifle

I had the chance to shoot with a long range rifle for the first time in my life, it was a Sako TRG-22... I made a 1½ group at 220 yards (6 shots)

Needless to say that I became an addict instantly...

Since I don't have the same budget as the TRG-22 owner, what would you reccomend as a good long range rifle in .308 ?

So far, I looked at the Savage 12 F/TR, the Remington 700 XCR, the Tikka T3 tactical but some good advice would be greatly appreciated (firearm, scope, amunition, etc...).

To you, what should be a "good value for the buck" long range rifle ?

Any or all that you mentioned would work fine, its been discussed at length in several threads in this forum.

I would buy have a high end barrel put on the action of your choice, Savage or Remington. If you expect precision, buy a factory rifle, and the barrel is so,so, what can you do?

If your on a budget, look at used. AND get .223 rem not .308win.
Savage has an affordable .223 model all you need is a decent scope and your in.

.223 is alot cheaper to shoot than .308 and if you reload you,ll shoot more for the same money.

I'm not sure which remington XCR model you're talking about, but if you're talking about the green ones, trust me, it isn't worth it.

I bought the XCR tactical long range for 1600$ total and after a while I wasn't too satisfied with the stock. It is a good stock for sure but palm swell wasn't for me, switched it for a mcmillan, which also has the advantage of having an adjustable cheek riser (but the disadvantage of a monstruous price). It's a good gun no doubt about it, but for the money, an el cheapo hunting remington 700 with a new barrel and new stock will get you a better gun than mine.

i would go with the ftr excellent longrange rifle 30 inch barrel for that extra speed wich is needed for the longer ranges,it comes with a good triger and the tolarence seem to be tighter in the chamber.you could shoot it for a few years and after that swope out the barrel for a new one.thats my .02 cents

Savage or tikka is my first choice. I said I would never buy another remington but just put one on lay away so we will see how that one shoots. But you should add in your post your price range and distance you will be shooting at.

My budget would be around $ 1 500 to start with. I could add more for acessories as time goes by (and money comes in...).

I shot at 220 yards and i loves it... Naturally, i would like to go further (maybe reach the 1000 yards one day) but at the moment, my goal would be at 600 yards.

Just to thread hijack slightly since I'm in the same boat, will a 223 be competitive enough in F/TR class or does 308 hold significant enough advantage against 223 that it's beneficial to the shooter to focus on 308?

308 and 223 have very similar ballistics. The difference is BC and bullet velocity.

Browning now makes a Target rifle in 223 and from the results I have heard, it is an excellent off-the-shelf F-class-capable gun.

Unlike Savage and their excellent F-Class rifles, this one is available in 223, 308 or 300 WSM. The 223 rifle is a good rifle in need of only a scope and some good ammo.

I prefer to shoot 308 over 223 but the guys here have a great point. And that is the cost of ammo. 223 is have the price to shoot if you dont reload. This gives you more trigger time for the buck. I know savage makes a nice rifle in a mcmillan stock that is about 1500 bukcs. This doesnt leave you any extra for a scope. But with that rifle you could just take it out and shoot.

what about reloaders?
what different in price is there between 100x match 308 projectiles vs 100x match 223 projectiles?

80-gr 223 bullets are 65-75% of the price of 155 .308s.

primers cost the same.

brass costs similar (which is to say, with 10+ reloadings, cheaper than a primer)

.223 uses about 60% as much powder as .308
