not sure were this should be posted, but i would like to know the laws about building a cannon. whats the regulations? can i have it so it fires cartridges (12gauge blanks)? can i build a traditional style black powder 12inch cannon that fires cast .45 tips? am i able to build it in my shed/garage or does it have to be done at a machine/gun shop? and would i have to register it?

you'll need to search this forum to answer your questions. Always good to call your friendly neighbourhood CFO to confirm.

There are a couple of cannon builders in the group you should be able to get some answers, I've always wanted to build one the wife on the other hand doesn't agree with me, so we agree to disagree and i don't get it lol.

Match lock muzzel loader fired by a fuse =no registration
Cartridge or caplock ETC=registration

thanks, do you know if i'd be legaly able to build a fuze fired muzzle loading cannon by my self or do i need a profenal to build it?

If you want to try your hand at building one have at it! :sniper:

I've made a couple and know a few others who have as well.
Use common sense and error on the side of safety in your design and materials. If you were to sell it I'm not sure what sort of liability issues might come up....

ok thanks alot, i'll draw up a few new designs and hopefully start building one soon.:D

I think the biggest question is "do you have the knowledge, equipment and ability to build one" ? Most small cannons fire patched round ball because they are smooth bore. At one point you appeared to be thinking in terms of using 45 cal slugs and that would imply rifling and if muzzle loaded would imply either mini or maxi balls. Also important that you choose a material that is strong enough and thick enough for a safety factor of several times and capable of standing up to repeated firing. For the most part building a model cannon implies access to a metal lathe to do the boring and outside contouring

I've built a couple, mortars though not cannons(shorter barrels, shorter range, higher arc= more projectile watching) the first one shoots concrete filled beer cans and the second launches a ten pin bowling ball, both are positivily gonna put a smile on your face. pretty simple to build really, tons of info here and on the web. basically you need a welder, some quality materials, and a tendancy to overbuild for safety
