building a double rifle on a shotgun action

There are supposed to be at least 2 fellows building .470's on Browning BSS actions in Canada, one in Ontario, one on the left coast.

On Nitro Express there is a chap in Ontario that has built a few, most recently a 450-3 1/4 on a Brno 12 gauge side lock.

double rifle

If you intend to build a double rifle on a smoothbore, then dont piss around in the dark about what action to use or not to use under whomevers ill informed advice.
As someone mentioned previously there is a book available "Building double rifles on shotgun actions"
Do not proceed without having a thourough grasp of the contents of this book.
$50 bucks is all it will cost you and if you dont want to put that out !!
Well youv'e got no business dabbeling in conversions of this nature.

A gunsmith friend of mine Stateside attempted a conversion of an LC Smith action from me. Using 45 calibre barrels, he turned them down to fit inside the shotgun barrels (sleeving). As was pointed out by several others, regulating was the problem. Closest he could get POI on both barrels was 12 inches at 50 yards using a variety of handloads. Last I talked to him, he pulled one barrel and made a Cape gun out of it (one shotgun, one rifled barrel).

how about a double that is a fully rifled 12 gage? Does anyone make such a beast?

Yes, these have been made. May still be in Europe.
I have a pair of Charles Lancaster oval bored, full length rifled barrels. Not the gun, just the barrels.
It is a routine, if expensive, procedure to rebarrel quality double shotguns by "sleeving", fitting new shotgun barrels to the monoblock. Rifled barrel blanks are available, and could be installed. Regulating would be an adventure, of course.
This would be an option, as far as making a rifled double gun from a shotgun is concerned. Discussion has been limited to use of rifle calibres, but there is no reason that a rifled shotgun could not be set up to use one of the excellent modern slug loads.

Incidentally, in the excellent thread in SuperCub's link, mention is made of balance in double rifles. Rifle barrels tend to be very slender at the muzzles, keping the balance point well to the rear. If liners are installed in shotgun barrels, and if they are full bore diameter, the gun is going to be a club. If liners were reduced diameter, and the shotgun barrel acted more as a casing, with the liner not being in contact for most of the length, balance problems could be reduced.

This thread remind's of an article or ad I saw in a gun magazine in the 60's or 70's . It was about turning a short piece of rifle blank barrel in 44 I believe on a lathe to the dimension of 12 ga shotgun shell , chambering to 44 Mag. I idea was that you could shoot a pistol cartrige in your single shot shotgun. Drop in the insert instead of a shotgun shell!!! Don't know if this was safe or practical....never heard about since. If it did work , of course you end up with a very short barrel...like a snub nose ...accuracy.???
