Building a Hunting Battery

Well, you've got the BPS and the 22-250 so you can scratch that part of the list off. I've only shot 2 coyotes and both were while I was goose hunting and they bang-flopped after being hit by a payload of 1 3/8 BB Steel.

A good hunting rifle in 30-06, 7 RM or 300 WM would do you nicely for most everything you will hunt. You could go with a 270 or 280, or something on the 308 case too, then get a 338 WM for bigger stuff. There's no real reason to go above the 300 Winchester, but then again, why the hell not? Don't buy anything just on the say so of strangers. Maybe you can't stand up to being pummelled by a 505 Gibbs, 458 Lott, 416 Rigby, or even the recoil of some of the "Standard magnums". No shame in that. It would be stupid to buy a rifle that beats the snot out of you and that you don't enjoy shooting just to sell it (probably at a loss) or let it languish in the gun safe. Try a few rifles in different calibers and brands. See what stock feels good to you.

Definately get yourself a 22LR for plinking and pot hunting. My everyday 22 is a Winchester 9422 that my dad gave me for my first birthday.

RDS,

Whenever you post something here, you are going to get a lot of opinions. Some you will like, some you won't. I've done it and felt the "sting", much like you did today.

If you don't want opinions, phrase your post carefully and be specific as to what you want. That way, if someone strays from the topic, it will show. I understood your story, but this is a national site and you have god-knows-who reading your post. You will get all sorts of insights, wanted or not. I'm not trying to be a knowitall, but "snowdog" gave me this advice when I first came to this site, so I share his wisdom with you.

As for the intended portion of your post, I think you would do well to add a .30 cal rifle to your collection (you said your grandpa was fond of the 30-06, perhaps that would be a good choice)

You already have a great scattergun and a varmint rifle.......maybe a good reliable .22long rifle might be a good addition too.

Not much you can't do with a four gun collection like that..... :D

I know "outdoors" has a beautiful pre 64 3006 for sale that would make anyone proud.....fyi

Yeah, well...I'm a 'wear my emotions on my sleeve' kinda guy and I don't really care what anyone thinks, as long as they don't intentionally attempt to insult me or my family for no rock-solid reason due to lack of information. Some people will go out of their way to make others feel bad...others will post negative comments just for the sake of argument. That's fine...they have to live with that and some day, answer for it.

Great suggestions in this thread...my wife's getting a list before Christmas with some of them...

I agree.....I think we are all here to help each other (and maybe get a great gun at basement pricing once in a while) or at least , find something that we have been looking for.

We get enough crap from the anti-gunners. We don't need it from each other....

Claven2 is a rough ol' coyote but I don't think he meant any harm......

Good luck in your search and let us know how your collection grows......

here's what i'd do if i had to start over (and didn't mostly hunt with my milsurps).

1. a good .22 for gophers, skunks, turkey, etc.
2. a sporter weight .223 for coyotes, longer range gophers.
3. a nice brno 8x57 for deer, elk, etc.
4. a .375 h&h for elk, moose, griz, *afrika!*
5. one of those baikal 45-70 doubles if they ever show up, for the thick stuff.
6. a 12 gauge of some sort for birds.

so that makes 6 for me. of course #'s 4 and 5 are probably not needed.

just my thoughts.

Hey, nothing wrong with 4 or 5 although #5 would not be my choice, I would perfer something in 470 or 500 nitroexpress! :D :D :D
