For those that have seen the inclusion of PCC in IPSC in the last few years. I have had some people ask what can they do to make their PCC reliable and competitive in IPSc PCC.

There are many upgrades you can do, but all of it is useless if you do not put the time into practice, and do not have a PCC that is reliable,

PCC’s have become much more reliant lie in the last 2 years with members taking them to the limits and manufacturers suppling better upgrades.

Below is my FX-9 next to our 2 time Canadian PCC champion Taylor Reich’s Raven.

There are many good PCC’s out there, but I will focus on the FO Fx-9, as that was my personal base PCC.

First thing I did was initially get a 10” upper for it, as the 18.6” was too long and front heavy for IPSC. The next upgrade I did was install a compensator on it.
IMG_3991.jpeg
I personally found a compensator was more efficient in reducing muzzle flip than a muzzle break. Especially for minor loads going 1100 fps (133pf)

I have an article here or in FB with the differences.

Next was the trigger, lots of people have gone with the Triggertech that they say FX-9 recommends, but I went with a Geissle G2S 2 stage trigger. I liked this as it gave me the feel of a pistol like trigger. Lots of people I know went Hiperfire, but we found any PCC trigger would work fine.

As for optics, lots of people have gone with the Holosun 507comp, or the 510c as it had a picatinny adapter on it already. Be wary, if you go either, get the 1/3 riser for it or it will be too low for you. I started out with the 510c as my main and the 507comp as my offset, but had to put in a 510c riser plate to get the optic at a good height.

I have now currently adopted Apex red dots to my arsenal. I find the Apex Fusion to have the crisp dots, and the reticals I like for IPSC you have many to choose from, for my offset I use the Alex Atom as it fits together nicely.
IMG_3963.jpeg
The offset I use is the 45/60 Arisaka with the RMR/SRO plate. The apex atom is available now, the Fusion will be later this winter.

The buffer system I went to is the Kynshot RB5015HD, I found this a very nice buffer system, and included with all the parts it still cost $200 less than the Scleel Roller system with similar results.

My whole buffer system was a 8.5” buffer tube, a 308 carbine spring (flat wire not needed), a Kynshot RB5015HD buffer, and 2 0.75” 2.5oz buffer spacers. This gave me a 23.5oz combined which of my buffer and BcG.

Note with the 2 spacers, the last round lock back is now disabled, but I can get it back if I remove the space. I prefer it not locking back as malfunctions can occur when reloading with a locked back bolt, and I like the extra weight back there. You may lose out a bit on “option 1” starts where you can have the bolt locked back, but it wasn’t enough for me to care.

The magwell is impotant also, as it definately aids in reloads, I went wit the Techwell for that. Not much per you can say about that.

Most other parts we minor enough and capable to an AR that it would be a personal choice.

Last thing is what mags to use, that is a big personal choice. You can use MagPul 110/27’s like me as they are 170mm and I don’t need to adjust my reloading style from my handgun techniques, or you can use the 10/33 and adopt the beer can method. Whichever works for you.

If anyone has any questions about building a IPSC PCC, you can ask them in this thread. I also have various articles posed on everthing PCC from ammo to how to get into IPSC PCC competitions

Cool write up. Thanks for sharing.

Question about the offset optic: Why? It seems you have a regular red dot on the top, so why another red-dot on an offset mount? I understand the idea of an offset reddot when using a magnified optic, but that doesn't appear to be the case here?

offsells are usually for hard leans on you strong side. I personally have mine sighted in farther for longer targets.

Most IPSC PCC matches us can range up to 100m

Thanks for the info Madcow, excellent write up and a good guide to those starting out 👍
I shoot IDPA not IPSC, but the number of competitors shooting PCC’s is exploding! Every match now there are at least 5-10 guys shooting them and last month we ran a PCC only match with over 40 shooters. This is the kind of info that could set the next generation of great shooters on the path to success

Great write up, and cool ass PCC. Can you use a pistol chassis, like a CAA MCK in IPSC?

Yes, you can use a chassis in IPSC. But... there are a couple factors to consider.
1) You wont be able to make as accurate of a longer shot due to the short pistol barrel. (PCC matches have at least one stage that is a shot out towards 100. Your accuracy with a pistol barrel is going to open up a lot out that far )
2) Higher % chance statistically of sweeping your support hand due to the hand placement on that short frame.
3) You wont look as bad ass (had to throw this in there ;))
4) This one might seem controversial, but, you will have more recoil/dot bounce with the short barrel due to lack of front end weight and the inability to utilize a sweet vertical up ported comp.

Over all it is usable, but it will put you at a disadvantage right out of the gate.

Cheers,
ACD

There are a lot of us on that Facebook group and its a great place to ask questions, get loading tips, build tips, etc. We also have one of Freedom Ordnance guys, Sheel Manufacturing, and of course the reigning Canadian National PCC champ Taylor Reich. If you shoot PCC, or are thinking of shooting PCC, its a great resource.

Cheers,

That’s why we started the group, it’s not PCC specific, and we have lots of industry people and experts for good advice.

Some of us spent years to get where we are today, and happy to share our experience

I’m actually teaching a Black Badge course this weekend, and have a PCC shooter in it.

IIRC the BB course has always been handgun-centric... I wonder if in future there'll be a BB course specifically designed for long guns..?
It's conceivable that eventually there will be no need for a traditional BB course once all the handguns dry up.
I mean right now you can't really even get into IPSC handgun unless you already know someone who can accompany you to the range/match AND lend you their pistol.

You can totally run a BB for carbines only. Currently in Manitoba we're running a combined course so you can qualify in one or the other (after your first successful match).
If you are handgun BB you can shoot carbine too. If you're carbine BB you can only shoot carbine though.

We do have a training manual for PCC right now, rifle is next

Like the others mentioned - IPSC Canada developed a PCC-Only Black Badge Course this past spring. There is a training manual for it, the exams are PCC Specific, and the shooting challenges PCC Specific (ie. All shot on Mini Targets) It's our future for a while so the course was needed. Here in NS we've done two PCC courses, with another scheduled in November.

I just taught my first PCC specific BB this fall. The students loved it.
