I'm look at building a Remington 700 for my first bolt action "hunting" rifle. I have a general idea about what I'm looking for but having some issues finding a bolt & barrel group to starting building off of. Any links or resources would be appreciated.

Also hoping someone can hook me up with some tips and tricks about building. ;)

This may go easier if you can narrow a few things;
"Building", will you be buying an action/barrel/trigger etc separately and sending it to a gunsmith?
Or customizing, as in buying a barreled action and choosing a stock?
Two completely different things.

I see this is your first post. If you introduce yourself in the greeting forum, you can apply for access to the equipment exchange. CGNs version of buy and sell. It's awesome. ;)

Welcome to Gunnutz.

What's your cartridge choice?

I had a 300 wm built using a 700 REM action, # 2 Gaillard barrel, McMillian hunters edge stock, and topped off with a Leica ER 3.5-14x42. It was all put together by Pete Sedman. A buddy of mine worked up a load 69 grains of IMR 4350, cci primers, and 180g Barnes TTSX. It is pushing the bullet around 3100 fps. I am really happy with the build. The gun is not hard to shoot either, and groups nicely.

Since this is your first hunting rifle, rather than beginning a with a custom rig, that can take months, if not years from concept to completion, and the expenditure of thousands of dollars, purchase a factory rifle, that you can begin shooting right now. Shoot the hell out of it, decide what you like about it, what you don't, and think about how it might be improved to suit you, then commision your custom rifle based on that experience if its still something you want to do. If you like 700s, a CDL wouldn't be a bad place to start, mount a suitable scope on it, in quality mounts, and put it to work. The difference in cost
between a scoped factory 700, and a custom rig, would provide you with the funds necessary for a first rate handloading setup, the benefits from which will do more for your field marksmanship than the custom rifle ever could. There is some tweaking to the factory rifle that you might find beneficial, such as adjusting the length of pull to correctly fit you, and installing a high quality recoil pad. The minimal cost of these alterations will pay dividends to your field shooting, and in ease of handling the rifle.

Yep, PM Guntech on this site. He's been building 700s for more than 40 years and NO ONE knows them better. He is also very fast on the turn around and his work is second to none.

If you're new to rifles, pick the factory 700 that is the closest to what you think you want, then shoot it until it either begs for mercy or you know what you want. In the meantime spend your money on glass and gunpowder.

I think that it was Barsness who said that one shouldn't logically build rifles unless he was comfortable making two large piles of 100 dollar bills and lighting one of them on fire. Thats assuming that he didn't pick some oddball caliber; in which case setting both piles on fire is more appropriate.

There's a fairly steady stream of builds that sell for less than the parts on them offered by people who apparently didn't know what they wanted. Keep an eye out for bargains while you shoot the hell out of yours.

Why not just buy a CDL and have it bedded/tuned up to start. You can do the restock/rebarrel later, but I think you will be pleased with it as is until you get a better feel for what you like.

As mentioned, funds would be better spent on a loading set-up. This is great advice.

i have owend so many different rifles and even more different calibers and i still dont know what i want for my first full custom. I would buy a Remington 700 ( if thats what you think you want) a shoot the crap out of it. Your opinion my change.

How much did any one pick out of this post?
A "newbee" living in Alberta . . . and while there are numerous possibilities within the province we are left without a clue.
What hunting experience to date and what aspirations for the future?
How much in your two piles of cash? Good point Dogleg!
Not even a suggestion as to caliber considerations!
Shooting experience or hand loading capabilities just aren't there.
My venture into a custom 700 for hunting proved to be too much money in a gun with limited opportunities for use.

Absolutely... Guntech is your guy. Awesome, honest as the day is long and more experience in his little finger than some of the "experts". He won't steer you wrong.

Best advice here for a beginner - just BUY a GOOD rifle and fit it with Good Glass and get shooting first ! jmo RJ
