My grandfather left me a very poorly sporterised P14 Enfield in essentially horrific shape. The only thing that may be salvageable is the action, my vision is to use it to build a usable hunting rifle. The rear sight has been ground away leaving an oval shaped hole that will need filling.

I am probably going to tackle the project slowly and am considering rebarreling to 9.3x62 or something similar. Will I be able to re-use the bolt? Install a new bolt head maybe? .405 Winchester has the same or nearly the same rim as the .303 so that maybe an alternative.

Assuming I am unable to do any of the work myself what would a re-barrel, filling the action and fitting sights cost and approximate turn around time espected?

Any pointers or suggestions? The rifle will not be fancy, the stock will probably be a boyds or similar in plain walnut, looking to keep costs down but end up with a serviceable rifle, the gun is one of only two he left me and I want to pass it on but it is just a crowbar at this point, I have fired though.

I will post pictures if that helps.

I have built several rifles using these actions. can be a solid performer but be prepared to spend way more then a good selection of brand new rifles.

If you just want a functional hunting rig, with very nice rifles like the new Ruger American or the dirt cheap Axis, paying 2 to 3 times the money to rebuild an old warhorse may not be the economy you are seeking.

BUT if you are interested, I can help and we are in the process of building one for a customer now.

PM headed your way.

I am hoping that by working in stages I can have a functioning rifle built and then upgrade as time allows. The barrel and action filling are my primary concerns right now. I have been thinking about the project for a few years and it will probably be a few more by the time it is finished.
