Building a short Wingmaster

These two 70s vintage Wingmasters are both about 27" in OAL. One fits five rounds of 2.75" in the tube with the +1 extension, and the other only fits three, but it has the full stock and is therefore a bit more stable to shoot. I love them both dearly.

For firearms that aren't semiauto shotguns or centrefire rifles, you can't cut a barrel below 18", but you can install one that was manufactured that way, provided overall length remains greater than 26".

It's easy to jam it up if you short stroke. It's also easy to say "well, don't short stroke it", but under stress things happen. As I'm sure you know, the flex-tab system allows you to slam the butt stock on the ground to eject the stuck round and it works.

I've had it happen (luckily not under a real life threatening situation) and it works.

This is another reason I no longer like the Chinese 870 offerings for lack of this compete feature.

Owned Wingmasters for over 50 yrs. 5 yrs. ago I had 10 in my safe of various configurations. I've shot thousands of rounds through them, and never needed a flex tab yet, nor do I know anyone who has. Lack of a flex tab wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

If you're doing a lot of tactical style shooting, where you'll often be shooting fast, while distracted and from less than ideal positions from a body mechanics standpoint, you're proably going to short stroke sooner rather than later.

I usually find in timed competition in the excitement it's the other way around, I rack it like I really mean it

Never ceases to amaze me what can be done with an 870.

Nothing beats it for a make it your own SG platform.

Remington gets bashed a lot but they managed to accomplish that with two platforms, the 870 and the 700 rifle. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

18.5" not 18.0"

(470mm = 18.5039")

Bull####.

The difference is in the action. The Remington 870 is NOT a 'semi-automatic'.

prohibited firearm means

(a) a handgun that

(i) has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or

(ii) is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge,

but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,

(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,

(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or

(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

(c) an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or

(d) any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm; (arme à feu prohibée)

(iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,

(c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or

(d) a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm; (arme à feu à autorisation restreinte)

Barrel length

(2) For the purposes of this Part, the length of a barrel of a firearm is

(a) in the case of a revolver, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to the breach end immediately in front of the cylinder, and

(b) in any other case, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to and including the chamber,

but does not include the length of any component, part or accessory including any component, part or accessory designed or intended to suppress the muzzle flash or reduce recoil.

3" shells will cycle through the Wingmaster. I put a Dlask 12 inch on my 870 but in retrospect I wish I had gone with the 14 inch (gives you the +1 option). I use this as our camping/predator shotgun and arrived at this configuration with the vertical grip and light mounted as seen after 6 previous configurations (hand stops, other light mounts, etc). It has a solid kick and this setup works for all users with varying shooting experience (read: they don't hurt themselves when shooting the shotgun set up like this). I had some hard extractions initially, and swapped out the extractor (if yours is not a MIM extractor as you said, it should be good) for a Volquartsen one, in addition to giving the chamber a heck of a scrub (which I should have done before I even put it on the shotgun). Since then it has cycled flawlessly and I have put about 50 3" shells through it.

14" is ideal.

I took a 250$ 1974 wingmaster,Cut the stock to the same LOP of my Hogue, refinished the wood, added a 14" barrel and a S&J Extension. Best 500$ 870 ever :)
