Finally getting around to building the solution to a pet peeve of mine regarding the CZ 858's hidious plastic chipboard furnature. Figured at least a few of you would be interested in the build, so I took some pics. Only part of the way through so far. This is the result of about 8 hours of work on my benchtop mill and lots of patience with a sheet of sandpaper to get stuff to fit.

Started yesterday by gluing up some wood and getting the outlines marked. I ditched the 858 style stock and am creating one to look more like a proper AK-47.

Heres the progess as of now. Upper handguard and pistol grip are fitted and awaiting final sanding. Stock is shaped, but still needs work, and lower handguard is still untouched.

Enjoy the pics.

Laying out the outlines. (Yesterday)

Pistol grip and stock. (Wooden stock is just lying on top of folding stock. Shaping is complete, but it needs to be drilled for the stock's bolt.

That looks awesome. What kind of wood are you using? How did you get the AK shape of the pistol grip? I was thinking of doing this myself,,maybe now that I see it in action I'll get off my ass and start doing it !!!!!

Thanks guys.

The wood is a nice red* (Fixed) oak that I handpicked off the racks from my local home depot. It was rough lumber when I got it, so I planed it down to 3/4" and glued two peices together.

This is my first proper attempt at somthing like this, and it seems to be going well. All of my rough sketches were taken from various internet photos of AK's, and I hand drew them onto the wood.

This was my main reference photo. (Yes, I know it is airsoft.)

I will keep you all updated as I keep going. Should have more pics within a day or two.

It's red oak. The grain and colour of white oak are quite different from the wood you have. No open pores in the grain. Why didn't you use something a little softer, and easier to work with? I'm guessing you were limited by the selection the home center had?

Either way, nice work so far.

Ah, don't know why I said white oak, I know better then that. :kickInTheNuts: Must be a byproduct of the late night posting.

Anyways, my selection was limited to red oak, maple, or some really crappy pine. The maple would have been nice, but I feel like the oak looks better.

I would have gone with somthing else, but my nearest lumber center is about a 50 minute drive away. Regardless, its coming along nicely.

Accurate, I may make a few more sets if I can get some sort of production line going, but that all depends. Let me finish off this set and I will see where I go from there.

Cheers,

Kevin M.

Great work, looks good to boot!
Makes me kind of green with envy, the only thing i can make out of wood is a good fire.
