Building AK-47 furnature for an 858.

Kevin,
That wood looks really nice, good job!

I'm not sure if it's just me, but the angle of the butt looks a bit "off" to me. If the angle where the butt joins the receiver was a few degrees less it would raise the top of the butt up a bit an make it more "right".

Thats one of the tweaks I will be making on the next version. The cut was made about 2 degrees off, on purpose - by accident so to speak. I had originally thought that it was not supposed to be in line, but I was incorrect. so I am going to fix that in the next version.

I will also have a crack at making some of the other models discussed for the handguards.

As for the finish, I have no problem with putting other finishes on it, or leaving it unstained for you to do it yourself if you are the creative type.

It is the stock that is proving tricky for me, just as deckard said a few pages earlier. Trial and error for now. I do not have the resources of a large gunsmith, so I am working with the limited time and money available to me.

Anyways, off to the Home Depot for some more supplies.

I will keep you updated with photos and info as I go.

Cheers,

Kevin.

Thats a really nice job. I wish you the best on getting this project to market. Lord knows we could use a source for "real" wood furniture for the vz-58/ 858's.
I made 2 sets myself, wish I could post some pics. The one set is oak, the other cocobolo. If things do take off you might consider some other species as well as oak.
Good luck!

Managed to sneak in a range day yesterday with the wood to see how it would hold up. Pleased to say nothing blew up on me! ;)

Everthing held up like a champ, and was a real head turner at the range. By the way, NeitArms, your cocking handle held up beautifully. It was a pleasure to use.

We did some various tests, benchrested, a bunch of rapid fire, just all sorts of stuff to make sure everything stayed tight. I managed to get two quick videos on my Iphone, so I apologize for the quality.

A buddy trying to benchrest it but showing off for the camera.

Me rapid firing the crap out of it. I put about 100 rounds through it in this fashion, but my camera was getting full and we still had more video to take.

To answer the next questions, no the production run is not going yet, yes I am still working on getting it going.

Amazing how busy life is and how fast time moves.

Cheers,

Kevin.

How is it NeitArms made you an AK-style cocking handle for your CZ-858? According to him, there is no market for strictly cosmetic upgrades...

Oh come on, I was kidding. I'm just frustrated that some people with seemingly good business sense think cosmetic upgrades have no market here. This thread is exhibit A in the argument against that. No one needs AK-style wood on their VZ yet people are paying decent money to get it. Doesn't that tell you something about cosmetics? I'm not the first person to ask someone to make my VZ look more like an AK.

Maybe I see this from a different perspective than most because I have always wanted an AK (as you can tell) but cannot ever get one. Perhaps the allure is stronger than the demand, but I like to hope that there are a few others out there that want to go the extra mile also.

It's one thing to do a manual one-off modification to a part for a guy. It's completely another thing to start tooling up to produce minimum orders on parts that don't have a demand. You need to reach the critical mass required to produce parts en-masse.

One guy makes a AK setup for a VZ and I'll take the time to make one mod for him. Show me 100 guys that want it and I'll show you parts on the shelf.

Honestly, i have one and it is not in any way better then a VZ. It is heavy and crude. Consider the AK, the fat sister in the red rifle family.

Neat stuff, very tempting.

Can we expect a less curved buttplate at some point, it appears that the deeply curved CZ one is reused and that just doesn't work for me. A more "AK like" wood finish wouldn't hurt either.

AK47 - 4.3 kg
AKM - 3.1 kg
AKSU - 2.5kg

CZ858 - 2.91 kg

So, AKM and CZ858 are almost identical in weight. durable and reliable AKM magazine is heavier plus cleaning rod under the barrel and tools in the stock that what make a difference...

AK crude? ...the only crude I've seen are chinese and some USA made

To bad I don't have a prohib licence to buy your unwanted AK :D
