Building an AR from scratch. Just like mom used to make.

What do you guys think about muzzle brakes? I understand the principle of them, but haven't fired a gun with one. Are they necessary? Perhaps add some aesthetics to the gun? Are they annoying to the person beside you (hate to the 'that guy' blasting the people on either side). Does using one make you less of a marks person?

On an indoor range, a brake is going to be noticeable...
A good brake is a real asset in a rapid fire match.
There are brakes that make an AR, particularly a short barrelled one, quite rude.
I wear good hearing protection; so do those with whom I shoot. Consequently brakes are a non-issue from the noise standpoint.

Great!

thanks and you brought up some really good points about the enclosed systems. I didn't think about that and will investigate further. I doubt I can just open up the assembly and clean around inside, or perhaps spending 400 bucks on a trigger would include a no questions asked warranty if they fail. That s something to consider and I heard some good things about the G triggers. I think I like the idea of two-stage trigger. My lightest trigger is on my 22 Victory, but the rest of my collection is milsurp with heavy pulls.

The optics I considered were some with low maintenance. I don't plan on shooting three gun at this time, and my shooting will be indoors (so this could affect the passive light from the Acog?). I also am looking for something for short range, and I don't think I need to worry about eye relief.

Intent - yeah just s and giggles and to be honest, just building the gun is probably 80% of the fun for me.

If you’re considering something for short range as well, highly highly highly recommend avoid the fixed 4x ACOG’s and strongly recommend going with something adjustable. On the higher end, I’d recommend a quality red dot like eotech or aimpoint, with a 3x flip magnifier.
This will give you the best of both worlds allowing you to shoot short range with the simplicity of the red dot, and at distance with the magnifier.

Okay great thanks. Have you used an optic and in conjunction with iron sights? Compatibility issues or other? I think I would like to use the old fashion iron sights and be able to use the optic.

Zero issues at all but that’s very dependent on what sights you use. I’m using KAC micro flip sights and they become a non issue when folded down.

I checked out the Faxon barrels from ctsupplies. Have you had experience with the barrels? I check back now and again to see if some reviews get posted.

Faxon is just as good as the rest of them. I believe their other division sells aerospace parts to NASA so they’ve got a good grasp on what they’re doing. I ran a 14.5” barrel of theirs for a few years and it shot as I’d expect any other rack grade barrel to shoot. Never shot it for groups though so I can’t comment on them accuracy wise. I’d say buy one with confidence.

Okay great thanks. What do you guys think about PMags. I see that you have some references to those in your signature. Since the mags are pinned at 5 if one buys a longer version, are you able to fit five rounds? My SKS is pinned for five, although kind of crudely pinned, but non the less, I can only get 4 in the internal magazine.

The Magpul PMags are great mags and I like having the long body of the 5/30 rounders to grip but they are limited to 5 rounds which sucks.

If you want to stay with a poly mag and want more capacity what you want is the MFT 10 round pistol mags. The MFT mags are every bit as good as the Magpul. Only caveat is that you'd have to be ok with a shorter mag body.

If you want the best of both worlds (10 round capacity and long body) you need to find some of the ASC LAR-15 10 Round Pistol Magazines. They are a metal 10/30 mag. You'll have to keep a look out for them because when they come in they sell out pretty quickly.

Hah, yeah we bought a lot of PMags back in those days. Some people were selling them for 75.00 bucks a piece.
But yes PMags are pretty much the baseline standard for mags. They’re cheap, and they work. Most guys that import them in this day and age pin them at 5.5 rounds so you can easily fit 5 rounds on a closed bolt. I’ve only ever bought “30 rounders” with the exception of a few 20 round mags and never have I had an issue with them. I prefer the 30’s simply for their ease of manipulation.

If you want 10 round pistol mags I’d recommend going with the LAR’s or other metal body mags. You can get dummy extensions that mimick the size of a full 30 round mag, but still maintain that legal 10 round capacity.

Other 5/30 mags that work well are quality USGI metal mags, although I recommend buying them from the quality manufacturers as I’ve come across some in the past that weren’t exactly reliable.
I’ve heard great things about Lancer mags as well but they’re expensive and harder to come by here.

Just remember, depending on how much you shoot mags are a disposable item and will eventually wear out and break.

I've seen LAR mags with "Ranger" pulls on the baseplate so that you can get them out of your ammo pouch (or magwell if they fail to drop on their own); they look practical but CGN may have opinions for/against.

Thanks. The look of the longer mags seem to fit the profile of the gun in my opinion. There's something anaemic about the small magazines. I probably won't be shooting a whole lot, so I'll be looking to buy something that is decent quality, as I will need probably two.

Magpul 5.5/30s are pretty much the standard against which others are measured. Two magazines... ohh kaay.
The 30 round body is very useful for prone (monopod rest) or position shooting, and makes manipulation easier. Something to grab.

haha I know just two mags.. that seems pretty pathetic, but I figure I'd save on ammo... maybe that will change once I have one to shoot right?
