Please note with the SPR (which turned into the Mk12) program the US Mil tried intially a 22" barrel - they notice degraded accuracy and very limited increase in velocity. It turns out on heavier barrels longer than 20" (and even some very heavy 20") that the upper receiver starts to flex and bow (even minutely) that hurts accuracy.
