Armageddon is on it's way and I need something fast.:eek: Actually I've been toying with the idea of a shorter barreled semi auto in .223 for a while so I guess the AR platform is the way to go because I don't have the money for a SAN carbine. I'm looking to build a middle of the road rifle so I need some advice as to which parts/company offer the best bang for the buck. Would I be better off buying something prebuilt from a manufacturer? blaxsun has a 7.5" build with pics in this forum which is like a nice pair of DD's in a string bikini top to me, but I'm sure the price on that one is pretty high.
 
There were a few short AR uppers in the EE for a good price.I believe they were around 1000-1100.Add any lower and your good to go.
I bought my 11.5 inch upper from Questar for arond 1100.I find it to be a good quality upper.
 
best to build the shorty AR asap.....will be very hard to get cool short barrel anything out of the US in short order. US gov is enforcing export restrictions with much vigor now.
 
I imagine the line up of guys who say that the Choklit Wonder can lick their b***s is getting pretty long.:rolleyes:
 
A shorty is over rated. Buy something mid length. I myself like LMT products. Their stock triggers are reasonable. The fit and finish generally is ok. I would buy a basic rifle, attach a simple Aimpoint and be done with it. This will meet most of the needs you will probably have with a basic rifle. Battery life is good on the Aimpoints to. If you want to add stuff to the rifle later you can, or leave it just as is.

I would strongly suggest you avoid a 7.5" barrel. It is far to loud and with the decrease in velocity really weakens the original intent of the round. Did I mention its loud? Real loud...

Thats just my opinion and others will disagree.

I like that sort of thing. If you want a good link on the rifle/barrels and ammo info search Ammo oracle. Its the definitive link for info on barrel lengths, ammo choice, barrel twist etc. You could go longer and might be able to get a better price on a 20" barrel. Some people think they dont look right or arent cool enough because of the length- this just means you can buy one used maybe for a good deal. Shop around abit theres lots of stuff out there. I would stick with a flat top upper to keep from limiting your options to much.

I myself like 1:7s, however I also have a 1:8s. Some of the older or commercial type stuff can be 1:9 or higher. The faster twist rates can stabilize heavier bullets. Heavier bullets can be a factor when you shoot shorter barrels. With a 16" in say a 1:7 you have alot of options and good velocity. A Micro Aimpoint is a good site, I would buy the cheaper H1 version instead of the T1 (unless you have NVD?).

For stuff like grips and stocks the magpul line of MOE stuff is cheap and works great- at least in my experience is good.
