Building an AR15

I decided to build myself an AR15. Instead of creating a ton of threads I figure I'll just bump this one when I need some advice.

So far, I've got a Blue Line lower in the mail, and I've already received a Daniel Defense upper from Dlask. As per their description I was expecting a YHM one, but I doubt I'll be disappointed with DD.

I've agreed to purchase a 14.5" S&J Hardware barrel from a user here, and it's coming with a low profile gas block.

My questions for the next few pieces are as follows:

BCG - Is a full auto one preferable? I Googled it and some people say the added mass improves feeding by it being very slightly slower, giving the mag more time to pop the next round up. I called Arms East today and they're expecting more Stag FA BCGs to arrive in about a months time.

Buffer - Do I want H or H2? This is a range gun, not expecting to do any competing.

Handguard - Want a quad rail for the LCF. Will free float make a huge difference in accuracy in something that doesn't have a really long barrel? Also, want something that will go over the low profile gas block, any suggestions for ones that don't cost a fortune, and what is the length I would need? I e-mailed Fab Sports about a YHM handguard, they aren't expecting any for 6 weeks or so.

Trigger - I was thinking of ordering the RRA parts kit from Questar with the 2 stage trigger. Do most people prefer a 2 stage trigger, and in your opinion is it worth the little bit more money?

I think that's it for now, thanks for making it this far.

If you are going to hang all sorts of shzt on your rifle, get the quad rail. If you want it for the LKF, go for it. If not, just go with a tube and barrel nut. Very easy to do, cheaper, better forend anyway.

Yeah, want it for the LCF, haha. The YHM ones are priced decently as far as I can tell. Anyone sell them besides Fab Sports?

BCG - If you have a choice, get the FA carrier - they run more reliably in most cases.

Buffer - If you have a 14.5" un-suppressed semi-auto, you just need a standard CAR buffer. If you go shorter than 14.5" you need an H or H2 depending what bbl length is, what ammo you shoot, and what BCG you run.

Handguard - Free float will be more accurate to at least some degree, especially if you use a bipod.

Trigger - On a CQB type carbine with a 14.5" bbl, there is probably no need for a 2 stage trigger. Assuming you are a decent shooter, the standard AR trigger is probably fine. If you were building a 16"+ long range target rifle, it would be a different story.

Not a good shooter, yet. I'm just getting into the game.

Thanks for the help, I'm sure there will be plenty of other questions as the parts start rolling in.

Got offered a Daniel Defense Lite Rail 9.0. Anyone know if this will be long enough to completely cover the gas block on a S&J barrel?

E-mailed DD and they said the Lite Rail 9.0 would cover it, so snagged that.

Just ordered a bunch of parts from Questar and a few from Arms East. I think all I'm missing now are tools (action vice block, wrenches, etc) and a flash hider and crush washer.

I hear the YHM Phantom is a really good one, but can't find that anywhere for sale. Anyone know where I can snag one?

I think you need to build a real work bench. Borrow a circular saw, buy a bunch of 2x4's and build something sturdy with stiff legs that you can also bolt to the wall - trust me.

That bench would NEVER work for reloading.
Im with Claven, grab some 2x4's and build a soild bench with sturdy legs, and if possible attach it to the wall or floor.

Not carpentry inclined, and unfortunately no room to build a sizable bench, or anywhere to bolt it to :(

Would that be this thing?

Find an old wooden desk from an government shutting a building down or something. You need something heavy and sturdy.

Nice, I like that. Didn't know which one you were talking about, I have it set up to view 100 posts per page so there were only 2 pages in that thread for me.

All of my parts are in except for the barrel so I'll be getting ready to build this soon. One question I have is should the upper/lower be cleaned with anything in particular even if they don't look dirty prior to assembly? Or should I just give them a light oiling?
