Building an upper -- BCG portability?

I'm planning to build a new upper for my DA556 and I'm wondering what to do first. I _think_ I need to put a barrel on my stripped upper and then add a BCG....

Can I use my present BCG in a new upper, or do I need one dedicated to the particular upper?

Yup , doing the same thing , stripped upper first , then barrel with flash hinder , handguards , next some sights , then a charging handle and last a BCG.

Run it with another BCG and charging handle till you have the coin for them.

I like to have a BCG for each upper I own but there's definitely no reason you can't have one and swap it between. If your BCG is in good shape, no need to replace it.

It isn't necessary, but you will end up getting one just because of the convenience of grabbing a complete unit rather than swapping parts. I found I couldn't even be bothered changing uppers so I eventually got a lower and ended up with a complete gun
