Building my own AR, the long way

So you wrote it?

The IGES file probably came from CNC guns. That's where most billet makers seem to have found their model (including myself ;) )

He still would have had to write the program.

When I made my AR10 and AR15 lowers, I used the cnc guns cad file for the main sizing, modified some things to remove having to 3d mill as much as possible, and wrote my own program to suit.

Choose your own serial number, call the horse police, mine were verified over the phone as well as a i had to send in 3 pictures. Bingo bango registration slip comes in the mail.

nice cutting; what size cutter did you use, I used a 5/8 for all but finish, did you sandblast?

My brother was a machinist, like my father and older brother, but i'm the accountant of the family. He would have made these about 10 years ago, with just the usual shop machines, no CNC.....I wasn't allowed near the machinery as a kid, so I can't offer anymore technical details.

Yes there is....I've actually registered a receiver against the frt number for homebuilt ARs

Not in accordance with section 14 o the Firearms Act. It simply needs to be described.

What they want and what is required are not always the same thing.

Wrong again... It has to be described in a PRESCRIBED manner... At present, there no methods prescribed for describing a firearm for the purposes of section 14 of the FA

Not to be argumentative but that doesn't make sense. Plenty of firearms with no serial number have been registered. How is that possible if there is no prescribed manner?

I'm genuinely curious, not trying to be an ass.

I'm unaware of any firearms that are registered without a serial number.... In fact, my understanding is that if there is a collectors piece whose value would be degraded by stamping a serial number on it, that the cfc provides a sticker with a specific serial number on it... And that sticker has to accompany the firearm

Found this:

Firearm Registration Regulations
Describing Firearms
1.1 For the purposes of paragraph 14(b) of the Act, the manner of describing a firearm is by referring to its make, class, type, action and calibre or gauge.

SOR/2004-276, s. 2.

Yes they originally gave out stickers, the firearm still doesn't have a serial number and I do recall quite a few people saying that they couldn't get replacements issued when they were ruined/unreadable.

I'll have to try and register an 80% lower without a serial number myself to find out for certain I suppose. I also found a thread on reddit where someone making a scratch built ar180 (armedsask?) and the RCMP said it didn't need to be marked but recommended it for identification purposes.

That's interesting.... I was told specifically that it needed a serial number and that the number had to be impressed on the receiver (couldn't paint one on)

I wonder if the cfc only accepts 14b for antiques or rare guns... And follows a different mandate for newly manufactured guns

What machine are you using?

I hope to have my Haas VF3 wired in before Xmas break so I can hammer out some raw forgings I bought a couple years ago. Cheating by starting with forgings, but they were cheap!
