Building off an axis action?

Savage, the original budget company, comes out with a budget rifle.
What could go wrong?
Start with a good action. Why take a POS, spend a bunch of money on it. Instead sell the axis, and start with a quality foundation. In the end the project will cost about the same, the rifle will be much better ....and if you dont like it, sellable for most of your money. Noone is going to care if you have 1K into a Axis, its still going to bring Axis prices in resale.

I had the same idea, only it was a rem 700. Got a new rem, Cadex chassis and didn't like it , so I sold the rem 700, ordered a new barrel and was going to buy just the rem action and have it worked on by a smith.But after a conversation with one of the Chou brothers , I scrapped that idea and ordered a Stiller tac 30. I know it's double the cost of a rem action but in the long run I think it'll be worth it. The rem action would have cost $550+ $400 for gunsmith fees. The Stiller cost $1300. So really it's not quite double the cost. I would say your better to just buy something of good quality.
I built a 223 from an Axis action, shilen barrel, my own stock, and I was in the top 3 most of the time for 2 seasons at PQRA.
If you already have the Axis it can be a very fun project. I enjoyed mine a lot.

I disagree with the first 2 replys. It would be fine to do a custom on a axis. I have been thinking of doing one for a precision hunter in 7-08. Say you start with a axis action, spend 500$ on a shillen custom barrel, 125$ on a timiny trigger, and $250 on a boyds stock. So you have spent just shy of 900$ for a very capable and rifle. But thats the same as a custom right...wrong. You still need to put down 1000+ for that stiller action. And as far as selling a custom rifle and only getting axis prices for it, that is nothing to worry about. A shillen barrel, tim trigger and , boyd stock are still going to be able to get near 75% when parted out, regardless of which action they came off of. And don't think that these guys getting customs done are going to get back what they payed for when they sell
Oh and lets not forget that going the axis route costs you zero $$ in gun smith costs.

Thanks for the replies. I am glad people have had luck with this. I will do some more reading and decide if its worth my time and effort.
I always like the responses that just say its a #### gun and you cant make your money back. I didn't ask if it was a good gun or if I could sell it for big money when I get bored, simply asked if anyone has tried something similar. I doubt this will even happen as I am basing this plan off the chance of grabbing one of the axis that reliable is blowing out for 50% off. If it happens, great, if not, on to something else.

If I can get one, I'll build on it and let you know. It'll wear a Boyd's a5 copy, a rifle basix trigger and a 26" bartlein barrel chambered in 6.5x47L. I still need to see if I can get a dbm kit for it. Scope will be a Bushnell xrs with Burris rings, unless the mounting holes line up perfect.

my thoughts exactly .......
guys where playing with the stevens action and looked down upon ......
the axis action is actually a stiffer action than the stevens .
the aftermarket isn't the same as the savage / stevens , but they do use the same barrels .
and it is not very hard to adapt a 10 round magazine to the axis , if that floats a guys boat .

these rifles go on sale for under 300.00 ..... find one on sale , ( hell even if you pay retail ) play with it .
then when your done put all the factory stuff back on it and sell it , and your out what , maybe 50.00 at most ( given the EE prices your likely to make money ) .

Built a couple of Axis rigs when they first came out. bobfortier helped out with some stock worked.
Worked very nicely and shot very well. The big limiting factor is trigger pull weight - 1.5lbs is it.. nothing lighter.
For barrels, Savage prefits and factory barrels interchange. And yes, the action WILL shoot to the needs of F class and tactical competitions IF you are ok with the trigger pull weight.
Stocks by Boyds and MDT... not sure if there are any others we can access in Canada?

Triggers - Rifle Basix and Timney
EGW scope bases. All this stuff is now possible so pm or email.
The action is very robust and well engineered. I did up some torture tests videos a few years back. I was surprised at how well the rifle did... links in my dealer forum or just search on youtube for MysticPrecision.
The irony is the Axis has a more true front end then many other big name factory actions... this is a byproduct of how they are manf.
Makes for a great winter project for sure.

I just looked up the rem 783...If I have ever seen a knock off, that is it. Its a remington axis, even put in a accutrigger. they say imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery
I have to say I was shocked at the accuracy potential of these guns. I bought a 243 axis for my son and changed out the trigger and swapped stocks over to a Boyd's thumb hole. First time we hit the range I couldn't believe what a gun for under $1000 would do with factory ammo. He regularly out shoots my customs which cost a lot more and it makes me want to puke lol. Is there any way to get rid of that horrible bolt lift on this model though? I haven't been able to find any aftermarket fixes as of yet.
If any body is worried about resale on a custom rifle don't do it in the first place.I got my kids a couple of axises in the last few years and am very impressed with them.Both of them can keep under 1 inch at 100 no problem.Not bad for a gun that costs less than a good fishing rod.
I didnt realize the axis was so cheap, thought you would have to pay at least $500.+ 3 or 4 hundred for smith work. That's where I was at. I just said #### it and sove an extra few hundred and got a better action. My buddy has a savage Axis 22-250 that can shoot 3/4 MOA . He's happy with it.
Jerry built this crazy rig off a "Stevens" action. Basically an old school Axis. Yes you can build a very accurate rig of an Axis action.
A Stevens 200 is a Savage 10 without the accu-trigger , not an Axis...
the Axis is not a 10/110. **edit** sorry I miss-read and thought you typed 'compatible'
