Building the ideal black shotgun (as opposed to a black rifle) is always an interesting exercise.

1) What would you use as the base (ie Remington 870, Mossberg 550, Winchester 1200)

2) What would be the suggested length of the barrel?

3) What furniture would you use?

4) What sighting system (if any) would you install?

5) What would be the magazine capacity?

6) What other accessories would you add?

I just started building one today. I was in to see Tactical Ordnance (Arwen Ace) and he had Remington Wingmasters, with a synthetic stock, 18in barrels for $150! He has a bunch of them he is selling off from a security company. Now I am going to have them stripped, and parkerized and teflon coated, add a mag extension and Wilson Combat Scattergun Night Sights. May add a recoil reducer. Not sure, but certainly a sling and a side saddle.

1. Base would be an 870 for me. There are so many accessories for it plus i love them.
2. Probably 18" i have a 14 but if I could go back I'd get and 18 because then you can do the tacticool pistol grip bit if you want.
3. Furniture not sure
4. I'm preferential to a bead sight but for the tacticool thing the ghost ring sights are really good. A friend has one on his shotgun and its quite accurate.
5. Mag cap i'm running is 4 in the tube 1 in the hold, good balance and really I don't need any more rounds than that.
6. everything but the kitchen sink should be hanging off the b@stard :p

I'm trying to build an 870 right now. bit by bit...

1) 870

2) 18.5, Vangcomp barrel

3) Factory Remington Express Stock, Surefire M69 Railed forend, Vang Comp ball safety.

4) Trijicon Scattergun Technologies Ghost ring sights.

5) Scattergun Technologies +3 extension. (7 +1 capacity)

6) Surefire M951XM with remote switch.

I think if I just bought a TR870 and put a Vang Comp port barrel it'd be pretty much done...

It's kind of a subjective topic, but this is my ideal
14" HP9/870
XS Bigdot tritium sight
Single point sling
Sidesaddle
TLR-1 weaponlight
Knoxx NRS (I prefer the non-recoil suppressing one, I think the spring is kind of distracting)

This wouldn't happen because I'd never be able to find a barrel, no one seems to make them for anything other than the 870.

1) BPS, 20 ga
2) 14" barrel
3) Factory synthetic furniture (or a basic no frills wood like for the 870P or Ithaca DSPS, don't think it exists though)
4) Remington rifle sights with XS tritium
5) 5+1, one piece mag tube
6) side saddle, 2pt sling, maybe a flashlight, parkerized finish on the steel bits.

I already have too many shotguns, however I would have liked to get him to do a 14" REM 1187 semi.Maybe Gadget can post some 1187 #### LOL :)

870 Police is the way to go.

If you can't find one go Wingmaster.

Load it up with everything. Just don't bother with a heat shield.

I have the same setup as mildot and paulinski except mine is grey.

I will tell you what I will do if I am to build a "Tac" shotgun.

1) What would you use as the base (ie Remington 870, Mossberg 550, Winchester 1200)

I will use Mossberg 590a1 series(models with metal trigger groups) over the Remington 870 and the Winchester 1200. Because to me the Mossberg is a better designed shotgun then the other two designs. Firstly, the Winchester is not being produce anymore, for I will not use a non-production model for my base. Secondly, the Remington 870 design is not as good as the Mossberg's. For example, the location of the Mossberg's safety and slide stop are at ergonomic locations, that is you can use them without moving your shooting hand(right hand) In contrast, the Remington 870 design requires the user to use two hands to use the safety and slide release. Lastly, how the shell elevator(a Mossberg term, aka shell lifter) cams UP back to the action is best thing about the Mossberg design, for a person can just dump in the shells and load them in the tube. Basically the Mossberg 500 series is superior due many smart features over the Remington design.

2) What would be the suggested length of the barrel?

I will go with 18.5 inches, so that the muzzle blasts are tolerable without hearing protections. Without hearing protections, any length shorter then 18 inches will be not tolerable for any "action" usages.

3) What furniture would you use?

Mossberg factory stock, without the speedfeed slots. I will not use the speedfeed stocks because they don't work well and cost more.

4) What sighting system (if any) would you install?

Personally, I really have no preference for what sights to use. For a shotgun, most likely a person will never need to use the sights to shoot a "thing". The best examples are the skeet and trap shooters when they shoot their shotguns.

5) What would be the magazine capacity?

I think that the more BBs you can get in any guns the better things will be.

6) What other accessories would you add?

I would get a good sling for easy transportation and quick transition. Next, you will need buckshots and more of them, and use them for training. Lastly, get some dummy shells that weight the same as real shells to practice reloading.
