A couple of buddies and myself think it would be a good idea to build our own long range competition rifle. We have between us some 308's and 338 lapua's and are wanting to build our own tac driver. Where is a good place to locate parts /barrels/actions/stocks etc? Is there any how 2 books out there that can walk us through the build to make sure we do it right? Any help would be appreciated! We are leaning towards a 50 or 416 Thanks ::50cal:

Neither Brownells nor Sinclair will ship the parts you are looking for.

There are several barrel dealers here on CGN, do a search, lots of info here.

As for an action, if you want a 50 you will be looking at a custom action. If for competition, you may want to stick with a 308 depending on the type of competition you are looking at getting into.

F-class has a "no Brake"rule and not too many ranges are approved for 50, most are approved for 338 though if you can shoot a 15 round string with it without a brake on.

Tac/Sniper shooting has lots of moving around so hauling a big 50 around as well as your gear would definitely be a challenge.

Not sure what your machining skills are like if you are wanting to do the work yourself but tight tolerances are a must for an accurate gun.

If you tell us what sort of competition you are interested in, more recommendations can be made.

Don't know of any kit or prefits for a .50cal.
A book or two, gun parts and presto, instant .416/.50 cal tack driver. Where can you find that? I'd like to know myself. ;)

Seriously though, a good smith and deep pockets will get what you need. Rick @ ATRS would be a good start for the action or entire rifle build. I believe PGW could help too.

Thanks for the info. Really appreciate it. Mostly we just want to build our own just for the experience and the fact that we are gun nutz!. We have Wolverine supplies right here in town and I know it would be easy to just walk in and buy a rifle just thought maybe if there was a how 2 book I guy could try it. Maybe a 308 would be a good start?

Thanks Again

Unless you're shooting F/TR, don't bother with .308; there are many, many calibres more capible and cheaper than the 308.

Look into the 7mm calibres, namely 284 Win, 270 WSM, 270 Rem SAUM.

Anything larger than 300 WSM will almost certainly need a muzzle brake too. Luckily, you live next to Wolverine, who could probably hook you up with the stock, mags, scope, bi-pods, blah blah blah. The barreled action will have to come from somewhere else. I'd suggest ATRS if you've got the $$ for it. They will do the whole thing (unless you wanted to put it together yourself, in which case bedding the rifle would be another consideration).

The is alot of book on the subject of building rifle, but what better are CD movie that you can get to help you start, Brownells do sell them and they can be shipped Here, action there is nothing wrong with rem700 action,Barrel: Ted Gaillard, but there are other like Kriegger, mike rock.. that should be a good start, as for muzzle brake and other accessory, it help if you have access to a Engine lathe and Milling machine.

Savage actions are always good for simple DIY "builds". Simple check-list would read
Action- Check
Shilen/McGowen/Pac-nor/whatever pre-fit barrel- Check
Stock of choice- Check

It's not nearly as involved as a DIY remington of course as you don't need to do any lathe work but, you can say that you put it together yourself and usually you have a pretty good sub-half moa shooter (or better) after all is said and done.

If you are talking building a rifle from custom parts and assembling it and wanting a tac driver I suggest you get an experienced gunsmith.

There is more to putting this together than you might think, first you will need a lathe and the proper tooling and experience to build a tac driver.

IMO if you want something to compete with you should check out a few of the guys that are used to building these.

I always hate it when a guy comes in with a couple thousand dollars worth of fubarred parts that he has tried unsuccessfully to make into a LR precision rig and then wants us to fix the fubar. All this to save a few hundred $$ and for an experience you may never live down.
I am all for do it yourself but unless you have some skills and accress to machines.......

Get this all the time at the shop(power sports) Lots of scrap parts worth more than $2000 because of the unwillingness to pay someone a few hundred to do it right.

I would probably be that guy! lol Not going to attemp it don't have the experience nor the ability to do the machine work.

If you want to put your own rifle together and don't want to use a smith for most things you could always build up a Savage 10 where you can get a prefit barrel which avoids the need to use a smith.

Otherwise you can always just buy the factory action/barrel of your choosing and put it in the stock you want and have a smith replace the barrel once you've shot it out...

For anything truly custom and in the price range you mention (AI) I would have ATRS build me a full custom rifle.
