You might save a bit of cash building your own, especially if you cheap out on some/certain/most components, but the reality is building an apples to apples comparison generally isn't going to save very much. With that specific build, chasing parts over time through suppliers and Brownell's and assuming you are taking advantage of locally sourced parts and free/cheap shipping, you could save around $200 doing it yourself.
Build if you want to:
- have full control over what components you use in the rifle
- spread the build and/or cost over time
- build a very high end or specialized rifle overall
- want to learn to do it or just the satisfaction of having done it yourself
If you've never built before or you lack the specialized tools to do it, then building can be less attractive.
Having said that, if you like ARs and you've never built one, you really ought to.
