BUIS with Optics?

Hi, I'm new to the AR world and have a question.

I have recently purchased a DPMS Oracle AR. I put set of BUIS on it and recently have installed a Vortec red dot and a Vortec 3x magnifier. What I've found is that the magnifier is mounted too far forward for eye relief without partially collapsing the stock and shooting with my nose up by the charging handle (feels weird). I was wondering what the answer is to this issue?

1. Ditch the rear iron sight and move the magnifier back....(after all, it's only a range toy)
2. Learn to shoot with a short LOP...it's an AR thing
3. Could you move the magnifier back and mount the rear BUIS behind the red dot? (thinking probably not,,,Google image search doesn't show any set ups like this)
 
If the rear sight does not fit, put it somewhere else or ditch it all together. my 2 cents. Having proper shooting and eye relief position are the priorities
 
Just to be clear, the rear sight fits oK... flips up with the 3x flipped out to the side...1/3 co-witnesses through the red dot etc etc. It's just that having it on the rail behind the 3x causes the 3x to be mounted further forward than I find comfortable for eye relief. Maybe i need a 3x with longer eye relief of a mounting system and body design that extends the magnifier further to the rear of the mount?
 
If it's just a fun gun then pitch the sight in your range bag and, as GT says, locate your optics where they fit you. best. If your optic conks out at the range, take it off, then mount your rear sight.

Also you can move your rear sight forward (think AK or Vz) and still be able to use it up to 100m (even more but I never tested it beyond 100m).

Best advice I can give you is to play around with it and see what works for you.

Wouldnt that make the rear aperture too hard to see through? VZ or AK sights are open notches and are designed to be used that way, AR sights are designed to be very close to your aiming eye.
 
I didn't find any issues with it... go to the range and play around with it. Best way to do it.

Move your magnifier back. Put your rear sight between magnifier and your red dot. See if this works for you. If it doesn't... remove it. Having proper shooting and eye relief position is the priority, everything else is secondary.
 
Thanks for the advice and comments. Here is what i have now. The magnifier seems to be more comfortable further back and i can still see the aperture ring in the rear sight mounted right behind the red dot. The weather is supposed to improve here tomorrow so maybe I will get a chance to field test this set up and sight in the red dot.

Get the BUIS zeroed, and tuck them away for a "SHTF emergency backup" if you like. You'll never need them for anything else if you run a decent optic.
 
Got to the range today and zeroed the red dot at 50 yards. The magnifier and red dot seem to work fine in this configuration. I ran out of time but will zero the BUIS next time.

The new LAR15 mags I got with the couplers from Bulls Eye London work well as do the IWI Beowulf mags I got from Epps.

I think I"ve been bitten by the AR bug.....thinking about a railed hand guard and a vertical foregrip with bipod now.:d

Once you have zeroed the red dot you can zero the BUIS without taking a shot. Leave the dot on and the adjust your BUIS until the dot is lined up correctly with the BUIS and you should be on target at 50 yards. You can check accuracy the next time you're at the range but you should be spot on since your aiming points will be the same.

My optics are mounted a 1/3 co-witness height. Am I correct in assuming this technique won't work in this case?

It should work as long as you can maneuver your head to where you can see the dot is sitting on top of the post...assuming the Vortex is parallax-free.

Although I'm in the camp of removing them after they're zeroed.
