A friend of mine shot his 308 blr last year and there must have been some dirt in the muzzle it bulged out the end of the barrel at the muzzle so I was going to shorten it to where it is still good and recrown it but it is a short barrel what is the minimum lenght from the muzzle to the breach if I end up to short for none restricted could I install a muzzle brake on it to lenghten it to leagal size?
 
Your measurement for a minimum lenght barrell is 18 1/2". This is taken from the bolt face with the bolt closed. It does'nt matter if the rifling is counter bored or no rifling at all. All bulges should be checked by a gunsmith to make sure no other problems have occured:confused:

However, for a lever action the only important part is the overall length of the rifle. Barrel length rules are mostly for a semi-auto rifles. If the OAL of the rifle with the barrel cut and recrowned is more than 26" you're fine.

Wrong

You can not shorten a factory barrel to less than 18 inches, however you may replace it with a barrel that is made shorter.
 
Legal definition of barrel length is from the breech face to the muzzle face, as measured with a rod. As guntech pointed out legal minimum for a rifle like this manually operated BLR is 18" (18 1/2" plus for a centrefire semi). Unless the rifle is going to be used exclusively with a 'scope, it will be necessary to remount the front sight.
 
Tiriaq remounting the front sight might be a problem it flew of when he fired and he didn't notice till a while later that the sight was missing that is when he seen the bulge in the barrel so unless he buys another it will be scope only.

Simulate My friend tried it he can't hit his barn with it at 50 paces I had another guy a few years ago that did the same thing to a ruger 77 220 swift and it also wouldn't shoot but it had a long barrel I think 26 inches so the fix was easy we still had lots of barrel left once we cut it and recrowned it I measured it last night from the bolt face to the muzzle I will end up with 18 1/2 so it should be good .
I will look in parts and bits maybe we can find a front sight there.
 
Coyote, Would your friend consider selling the BLR.
What model is it a 127,227 or 427. I am looking for a donor to build a 260 Rem.
127's and 227's are steel receivers, and I believe the 427 Lightning models have an aluminum receiver and are not as easy to re-barrel as the locking lugs are in the end of the barrel. Someone please correct me if I have been mislead.
