bulged shotgun barrel

A friend has a 12 ga shotgun with a slight bulge in the barrel just ahead of the forestock. Is this thing still safe to shoot or should it be junked???
 
It's difficult to say without knowing the type and make of gun and just how bad the bulge is. With some guns a small bulge wouldn't be an issue. With others it would be the end of the line.

In any event, I'd recommend your friend take the gun to a qualified gunsmith and get his opinion.

Seriously get it checked by a smith. Unknowingly shot my weatherby 92 for most of a season when a small one went unnoticed by me.
Because of where it was in the barrel it was deemed safe by a certified smith.

Have it checked by a good smith. A knowledgeable gunsmith may deem it safe and place what I think is called an anvil in the barrel, and hammer down the bulge. Used to be a common repair years ago, but with interchangeable barrels, a lot of people just change barrels.
