looking at buying bulk ammo off the hop for target, ipsc, idpa, everything in bulk seems to be fmj, is that what most are shooting, even for reloads?

It's what's cheap and affordable in the quantities people use.

I think most reloaders are using plated bullets now to keep costs down. If I was stuck using factory, I'd recommend buying a small quantity first and chronoing the ammo in your gun. It's no fun getting caught short at the chrony stage on a big match.

never even considered that, in production theres no major power factor, do you still have to chrono. I'm leaning towards a glock 17, thats stock service for idpa ?

Never assume that loaded ammo will make your required power factor out of your gun! even in production you still must make a minimum of 125. i am not sure what it is for IDPA but i am pretty sure they have a minimum to.

IDPA SSP (similar to IPSC production) is 125 too. Power Factor is bullet weight in grains multiplied by velocity in fps, divided by 1000. *most* 124 grain 9mm will make 125 but it is not guaranteed.
