I've been looking at purchasing powders in bulk from Higginson but I've noticed on their price list that they sell 7lb. containers.

Why is it that everywhere else they sell the same powders in 8lb. containers?

They buy/import in large bulk quantities, and then repackage.

I would assume that this mean that they don't come in their original factory packaging (Gallon style jug) ?

Why would I buy Varget from them for $175/7lbs + shipping when I can purchase factory packaged $205/8lbs locally?

Since you are in Montreal why not drive over and pick up everything you need and save shipping?
I think the prices between higgy's and Londero is pretty similar, and you get factory bottles at londero's and I think it's closer.

It would cost me nearly $50 in gas to get there with my car and that's not including the 3 hours round trip of my time.

At least at Londero they have firearms and reloading equipment and I'm only 40km away and I live on the island.
The last time I went to Londero for powder I walked out of there with an SKS and my Savage 10BA.
Come to think of it maybe it would have been cheaper to drive to Higginson.

The last time I bought bulk powder from Higginsons it came in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box. All perfectly fine with me and as I was expecting.
This is why I keep my empty jugs and just fill them up again. Remember to label the new containers well if the powder type changes.

I looked through their entire site and there is no mention of it being packaged in bulk.
I would not have been pleased if I received it that way being that I'm relatively new to reloading and don't have jugs to transfer it to.
Do they at least provide the lot number?
Thanks for letting me know.

The lot number is on the package.
When I transfer it to smaller containers - I save them all - in addition to labelling the powder type, I include the lot number, and the date.
It is also worth ordering enough powder to get their free shipping. Pool an order with friends.

Seems pretty straight forward - In fact one might wonder why you even bother asking the question..?? Could it be you are #####ing?

If you can buy it locally for same price why are you asking on here
Do you need a 7lb quantity as opposed to a 8lb package!

1) Unlike your "local" store, Higginsons tend to have it in stock.

2) They tend to have Hundreds of pounds of the same lot on hand, which for many rifle reloaders is comforting.

I have been buying supplies and powders from Higginsons since they were known as Xelex, then Ammomart, now Higginsons.
Goes back to early 1960's. We could buy 22LR rimfire ammo from them for $.69/100. The stuff was made in Europe, but most was good quality. [Gevelot and others]
Thomas, the original Owner, was a real character, and I always enjoyed talking to him on the phone.
He was a tireless campaigner for better shipping costs and catering to the reloading community.
At one time he had about 20 surplus powders available for the reloader at very good prices, indeed.
I once talked him out of 56 lbs of bulk Norma MRP for $8.00/lb, when it was retailing for around $25.00/lb. On top of that, he sent me 4# extra as a bonus!!
He has always packaged bulk powders in 7# heavy poly bags, which just fit in the cardboard boxes he had made up for the job. [You could also get a 4# or 1# container]
The powder number and lot number are always on the package and usually on the poly bag as well.
Some of the later "newly manufactured" IMR and Hodgdon powders now come in their original 8# dark plastic bottles.
I do not see a problem with the 7# packaging, and have never seen a case where it was a disadvantge so packaged.
If you order 21# or more, Higginson's picks up the shipping, but not the Hazmat charge.
We usually try to pool and order a big shipment at one time. Splitting up the Hazmat reduces individual costs.

The initial question was why was the size of their packaging different than everyone elses.

EDIT: Now that I went to their home page instead of their products page it is clearly noted that they repackage their powders.

My first concern once I was told that their powders came in plastic bags was that the powder can go bad if left exposed to air and moisture since we are always told to store powders in a cool dry place in sealed containers.

The next question that begged to be asked was why could I purchase 8Lb factory sealed jugs of Varget from my local firearms dealer who is small potatoes compared to the self proclaimed "Canada's largest distributor of reloading powders" for nearly the same price?

They go on to say on their home page "Creating an exclusive cost advantage over their competition"
My question is where is this cost advantage?

In all fairness his Vihtavuori prices are very good.

I have no reason to ##### since I've never purchased anything from them.
If Canada's self proclaimed largest dealer of firearms advertised that they could provide you with an "exclusive cost advantage" over everyone else you would probably be the first to ##### about it when there was little or no cost advantage.

Shouldn't someone who claims to sell over 2,200,000 pounds of explosives per year for the last 60 years be able to do it for at least 5-10% less than a small firearms retailer?

Higgy's Varget/1lb = $28
7lb = $175

Londero Varget/1lb = $28.95
8lb = $199.95

One hour return trip to Londero's or a two hour return trip to Higgy's, the choice is yours, but I know where I would be going. You could always go to Dante and pay wayyyy more. ;)

What got me started on this whole subject is that I want to purchase 24Lbs of Varget and 4000 CCI BR-2 primers.
Enough to last the estimated life of my barrel.
I doubt that Londero would have enough on hand from one lot but I may order it if I decide to stay with Varget.

The only thing that's holding me back is a lack of testing at a range longer than 200yds.
