Bull frog hunting

Any of you fellas do this? Just watched a show on it, and was thinking I should do it this summer. What methods, and equipment do you guys that do it use?

I actually catch them with a fishing rod and a piece of pipe cleaner on the end of the line.... they think it's a fly and grab it....

They have a thing for red if you use 'lures'. Traps are easy to build and if you blind them with a spotlight you can get super close and spear them.

Personally, this is my favorite piece of frogging gear. Not everyone has an electrofisher in their garage, but wow can you fill a boat quick!!

Not to sound dumb... but what is the purpose of catching frogs? Is it kinda like gopher hunting - a just-for-the-heck-of-it thing? or are they used for something?

Yup...I use a dry fly, and bamboo pole though...

American bullfrogs are an introduced species in the lower mainland of BC.
They are killing off native species, so are Schedule C animals in the hunting regs

They were originally brought here for frogs-legs for the restaurants.

So hunt them for food, or for the environment!

Skinned frogs legs, marinate overnight in a marinade of Kikoman soy sauce, a little gin, freshly minced garlic, lots of black pepper and a few diced green onions.

Leave overnight.

Cook long grained rice on the stove top. When most of the water has boiled off, but the rice is still saturated with water, pour the frogs legs and marinade into the rice, mix so that the frogs legs are mixed well into the rice, cover, turn to low heat and cook till rice is done.

That's why I like to catch frogs.

anyone ever try a canoe and a pellet gun would they float if they got shot?

Yep, they float. I know you're a pretty good shot, but hitting those buggers from a canoe is no small feat! Hence the electrofisher for those of us who want to go into full production mode......
We were spotlighting the ones just along the shore and getting them last summer. The cool part is their eyes glow a different colour from the local frogs so you can spot them at a distance. Wiring up one of the cheap halogen house spotlights from Canadian Tire to a car battery made for the ideal spotlight.

Shoot them with pellet guns.PS I had frog legs in California last summer and wouldn't try it again.It was like eating rubber bands.The alligator was good though..........Harold

Must have been in the freezer a long time.
I do like the gator though! We have done the frog huntin' from an air boat in the Mobile, AL delta and regular boat in MS delta.

You can buy a frog gig at most stores that sell fishing stuff, I got a couple at Canadian tire, some in the states.
Frogging is fun!

Similar to a few suggestions already, my Grandfather used to thread a small, red balloon onto a hook and dangle it in front of the bull frogs from a fishing pole. I couldn't even guess how many he took over 80+ years.

Some of the older Bull Frogs are quite tough and hard to bring down with the lighter rifles.I perfer the Winchester .405 and .50-110 to hunt them.
