Bull Pup for PRS

Once you get skilled at running the action, there's no reason you couldn't. The shorter length makes them wicked fast on transitions for shooting from ports or barricades, however besides the Desert Tech, there's not a lot of great options on the bullpup market that would suit PRS shooting.

The C/S 66 guys used them for PRS comps before moving onto PGW rifles.

The ergonomics aren't great for that style of shooting. You can make it work, it's just not ideal or optimal.

Bullpups are great if you get along with the ergos and need a compact package, but there's no real advantage to running one for PRS.

I ran a Desert Tech in both ORA PR and a few of Tactical Teachers' Early Petawawa PRS matches.

I liked the balance and once you get the hang of how to run the bolt it works very well.

I left the platform because of the magazines. Matches (especially PRS) with 6-round proprietary mags was less than ideal.

My biggest pet peeve is the barrel stick out on rifles ! Anything longer than a 20" barrel is just annoyingly long while in a bullpup form you can have another 6 or 8 inches of barrel while still having a shorter barrel sticking out

10 round mags are available. But $$$

The only advantage to a bullpup in PRS would be the shorter length of barrel protruding ahead of the action making getting into and out of ports faster. The disadvantages are many, however.

PRS (actual Precision Rifle Series and similar matches) has evolved to where there is a "standard" of how a typical rifle is set up. It'll be over 20lbs and have a 26" barrel (for velocity with less pressure) and have a very long, flat handguard (and possibly a gamer plate attached). To hit that kinda weight, the barrel will be a very heavy contour and the chassis is generally designed to take internal and external weights. These weights allow the shooter to tune the balanced to a point just ahead of the magwell (essentially the center point of where a Gamechanger bag would be) or perhaps a hint of forward weight bias. The action will be smooth and will run 10 or 12rd mags.

The only bolt action, precision bullpup I know of is the Desert Tech. It's a relatively lightweight rifle (8.8lbs per their website) with an obvious rearward weight bias and too short a handguard to accept much in terms of weights. Although I'm sure you can learn to run the bolt on it efficiently, I don't see how it could be done as smoothly as on a traditionally laid out rifle. None of this is to say the Desert Tech is a bad rifle though, just not suited for PRS. From everything Ive heard/seen about them, they're a great rifle, especially if the advantages of the system dovetail in with your needs (mainly a very short OAL). There's a reason you see maybe one at a match with 200 guys and zero in the top 50.

IIRC, Tactical Teacher got a Desert Tech a few years ago for this reason. Give him a PM and find out details.

Nope, that wasn’t me. I did rock an AI AX, Barrett MRAD, and Daniel Defense D5 Pro for the past 10 plus years. I will have to say watching the Desert Tac shooters cycle through my stage(s) at MLRSC over the years has been hilarious. :nest:

I won’t explain why, but I will say this; In the tank traps stage back in 2017 that RyanMcle assigned me, I giggled like crazy watching the Desert Tech/Tac shooters have to be inconvenienced with the tank trap up right. I won’t say any more. The tank trap and other obstacles played havoc with the abbreviated balance point of the entire platform. ;)

That’s all I’m gonna say! Without that Desert Tech/Tac, I would be a very boring person at my PR matches.

All great fun, though!!

Cheers!

The ergos just aren't conducive to awkward shooting positions.

The DTA excels in certain situations if you get along with the ergonomics of the chassis. PRS matches just isn't one of those situations.
