Im having a 243 built on a mauser action. The threads were cut off a 6mm Br barrel, and I'm having it rechambered it for a 243 I was told that it had either a 1-10 or 1-12 twist. So I was wondering what the the heaviest bullet that the twist rate will shoot. I've got a few boxes of 54 gr and 72 gr. varminators, and planning on trying out some 85 gr. partitions. The rifle is mainly going to be used on gophers and animals that size. ( maybe deer 85 gr. partions ) How do the target match bullets do on critters that size? What other bullets do you suggest to get the pink mist? What type of crown do you suggest? Thank you for any suggestions.

If it is a true BR barrel, it could be as slow as 1:14. Put a tight fitting patch on a cleaning rod, and make a little flag with some masking tape. As the rod moves through the barrel, the flag will rotate, and you can measure the twist. If the barrel is 1:10, it will handle most bullets, 1:12 up to 85-90, if they are fairly blunt. If the twist is slower than 1:12, bullets up to 75 might work, no more than 70 would be better. Any crown will work if carefully done. I generally cut a recessed 90 degree crown.
