Hello, I purchased a box of .357 bullets (FMJ TC in 125grn) and they have the groove or cannelure in them. The thing is that the cannelure is at 2 or 3 different heights/locations along the length of the projectile. If this is the place for the crimp to be placed, in keeping the same OAL, then the cannelure is either below the crimp, or slightly above/in it.

My guess is the answer is "don't worry about it", can someone please tell me that so I can continue?? :)

i've only seen 1 cannelure on a 125 gr sized bullet, brand or pictures?

when you say keeping the same OAL, same as what? new bullet = new OAL.

Here is the pics of tge bullet with different cannelure height

that's odd.... is this all from the same bag/box? looks like poor quality control to me, those also look plated, correct?

if they are all from the same box, then i would crimp at the most common one. hodgdon says 1.580-1.590 for various types of bullets.

No pics here???

Is there multiple grooves, or just one in different places?

I guess if the others saw pics, they must just be garbage, but my first thought was they have multiple lube rings on each bullet.

i'm not sure why the picture is not showing up, but here is the link. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0h6tzoisqz8rkyg/Photo%202013-04-09%205%2005%2037%20PM.jpg

anytime someone claims to be posting a picture, if you quote their text, you can see if they tried to post something and likely figure it out.

LOL Thanks.......

In this case, yes those bullets are pretty crap as far as QC goes, but who cares.

Just crimp them at the length you want, and don't even worry about the cannelure.

Reloaders have been crimping above and below cannelures for ages in all sorts of calibers to experiment with bullet length. Hell there is a whole lot of bullets with no cannelure in the first place.

I'd shoot em, assuming the weights are regulated better than the cannelure. ;)

Absolute crap for qc. Seat to your required length but if these are plated bullets do not use a heavy crimp, and as mentioned above, verify their weight first. Best to have consistent weight.

Sorry lets try again...yes they are from the same box. I've contacted the manufacturer and see what they say. I've reloaded about 50 of them so far but it's unsure whether it will affect performance.

These are FMJ so they should be fully copper plated. I did roll crimp these and kept my OAL consistent so the cannelure is either above to below the crimp location. Would you just use them or would you take them back? Opinions welcome..

fmj and plated are different, FMJ's are jacketed (very thick layer of copper) and plated are a very thin layer of copper.

email the manufacture and see how they respond, show them the picture. they may refund your money or replace your old ones. i would personally use them still.

I'd shoot em.

Assuming they aren't magnum loads you don't need a real heavy crimp anyways.

Just seat them to a consistent depth and use a light crimp.

You may want to mic em, and weigh them though, but assuming that checks out you are fine.

I'd still let the manufacturer know, but wouldn't go through any hassle to replace em. Not worth it.

If you shoot enough they will be gone soon anyways. ;)

Who's the mfr again so we don't buy that brand? One poorly mfr bullet.

Looks plated, jackets have deeper and well defined cannelure.

OP> Google jacketed vs. plated.

I used the term plated, but the box says FMJ on it so you would think they should be jacketed, but their website says copper plated. Manufacturer is "Cam-pro"
