Bullet choice 3 gun and self-defence

Going to be reloading 40 S&W for 3 gun and self-defence, what would you choose, weight, brand and etc? Are cheapest I can find ok for 3 gun, should I shot same bullet weight in 3 gun as I use for self-defence? Do I use same powder for both? I'm thinking yes for consistency.

Why not just spend the $40 on a box of defense ammo like hornady
