Hey guys

I have an antique c96 I want to get shooting and I have everything I need except bullets

I know the hornady bullets are .308 but from my understanding the bores can be much larger up to .310-.311.

So I am wondering if it would be safe to use .32 cal(.312) jacketed bullets 71 gr in the c96? These bullets were intended for .32acp but since I can't find any other bullts for the mauser I thought I'd give it a try and ask for advice to see if it's safe or not

The bore is worn by there is still rifling, so I'm thinking the .312 bullts might be better for this worn bore

Other than to try some and see how that works out - a thought - most of the time a bullet is close to size of the "groove" diameter. If you have not slugged your barrel to know what is the "groove" diameter, just looking at the lands wear or not is not really helping about what went on in the grooves - maybe just as worn larger as the rifling tops? Maybe only the rifling wore and grooves are still about same diameter as original? I would suggest to either try different diameter bullets to see what works best, or slug your bore to find out what was "groove" size, and perhaps start with that size?

From experience - if you get too fat with the bullet, and seat it in a brass, then can not chamber it - either assembly is "too fat" for the neck of the chamber, or bullet is "too fat" for the barrel throat ahead of the chamber and before the leades - the "freebore" area.
