Is there any way to dissasemble a shell, without the use of special tools, without accidently putting a hole in myself?

I'd like to pull a 9mm and one of my 7.62x39's apart into their components to act as a visual aid (and probably turn into a snap cap) I've done it with shotgun shells before, but those are pretty easy to pull apart with basic tools laying around the house

well now Im not afraid of vice grip pressure some how setting off the powder, but I'll have to work on my technique, cause the bullet is a chewed up mess now, haha

thanks again

normally the pliers are only used on the bullet, hand on the case. Twist and extract. I do this all the time in warehouses to check the powder in surplus ammo, I use a leatherman.

Go pick up a interta pullet puller (order online if needed) it won't damage the bullet, and it easy to use. PLus it is usually under $20

Some exposed lead-tipped bullets get dinged up in Inertia pullers. A small piece of foam placed in the bottom of the puller cavity will prevent tip damage.

I use my press with no die and found this the best and fastest method of pulling bullets. Run the cartridge up to the top of the ram travel, grip the bullet with the serrated portion of a plier style wire stripper, then lower the ram, out comes the bullet, and the serrated portion of the wire stripper only puts a couple of dimples in bullet. Soft lead bullets may suffer some damage and if damaged should be culled after pulling. The problem this method has with respect to short pistol cartridges is that you may have to use an exteneded shell holder to raise the bullet high enough to where you can grab it with a tool.

If you don't want to buy the puller for one shell only, take a piece of 2x4 and drill a hole through it side to side near one end. Put the appropriate base holder on the shell and duct tape the shell into the wood. Whack it (slug down) against something heavy and solid several times and the slug will come out. The plastic inertial puller is a lot easier but the home made one will work and does not damage the slug

I pulled a bunch of 3o3 British bullets with a home made inertia puller. In this case I used birch wood and drilled the hole so the cartridge went in until it just snugged up as the rim was reached.
I put a proper handle on it and it worked just as well as a bought one.
