Bullet I.D. Help?

My F.I.L. gave me 2 bags of bullets that he got from a friend. He didn't have any info on caliber or grain wt and I don't have the tools to determine that either. There are 2 unopened bags that weigh just under 10lb each. They are to be round nosed cast lead with a gas seal? They appear to be 5/16" diameter. Not sure if they can be identified by appearance alone or not.

I didn't open a bag to take one out as if their not something I can use I'd rather sell them unopened.
 
How about a 9mm bevel base ( not a gas check step on the base) of about 115 grains? Commercial maker unknown.
 
Thanks, what would be a fair price to sell them for, or does the shipping for the weight exceed the value of the bullets?
 
Where abouts do you live? if you're in the lower mainland / Vancouver area you can borrow my calipers and scale and know for sure. 9mm is .355" and .38SPL/.357 is .357" so might be hard to tell that extra 2 thou with the measuring tape.

As for price, there is going to be a huge amount of weight which eats up the value. If you can find a local buyer that would be best. If it's 9mm and 115-124gr you're looking at about 10cents each, if it's .38SPL then you're looking at about 12 cents each. Those prices being retail on lead.

so if you have two 10lb bags... you have about 1,000 to 1,200 bullets there. so retail of $100 - $120. (if my math holds up)
 
Great, thanks for the info, I'm in Ontario. I have empty 9mm and .38 brass to see what fits. I'll find a grain scale and caliper to confirm what I have and list for a local sale
 
Be careful, your method of measuring is pretty crude. I load 38/357. the diameter reads 9/32" AND 9mm on a tape measure. However, with a set of verniers...mine read .357" exactly.

Take one to any mechanic or machine shop. Both have calipers and can measure to .001". They will tell you exactly.

In comparing with mine, I shoot 148 gr leads. The bullet is smaller, but not sure if I would be so bold as to be that precise from a picture (ie. it is 115 grains). Unless of course, that person uses those exact bullets.
