bullet interchangeability

You can never interchange anything...except when you can.

Lots of guys, like me, have shot .308 dia bullets out of their 303's, designed for .312 bullets and found they work just fine.

I know more than one person who shoots .311 bullets out of their worn .308 win and .30-06's to regain some of their lost accuracy instead of buying a new barrel, and one other fellow shotting 123 grain .310 TSX's (meant for the 7.62x39) out of their M14 (.308 bore) since they simply couldn't find any TSX's in .308 at the time.

And then there are cast bullets, where the last thing you want to do is shoot a .308 dia bullet out of a .308 dia bore....

So, I hope that clears everything up for you...:bangHead:

^^^ Like he said.

Two caveats.

1 - A bigger diameter bullet (like a .312 in a .308) in itself won't be a problem, so long as you start low and work up.

2 - You have to be aware of two steps that could turn the round into a pipe bomb. Don't shove the fat bullet hard into the rifling (unless load is mild) and MAKE SURE THE NOW FATTER CASE NECK DOES NOT TOUCH THE CHAMBER WALL! The neck has to be able to expand to release the bullet.

7.62 x 39 reloading dies often came with two expander balls, one for .308 and the other for .310/311 as Ruger used to build their Mini-30 with the tighter .308 bore.
