Before I reload a batch of 223 I thought I'd ask a question on bullet length.
I've always loaded my bullets to spec in regards to length.
Can you load them shorter than spec?
If so what effect does it have on bullet flight and reaction.
 
If you try and shorten the bullets themselves, that could cause a lot of problems.:p

Now if you are talking about the overall cartridge length, that will vary from gun to gun , and load to load.
 
Why would you want to go shorter?
Reducing the OAL will increase your preasures. so reduce your powder charge and then work it up.
I as a general rule load load all my ammo as long as the chamber will allow and then work up a load.

Not necessarily, in many cases, the pressure is lower with a jump to the lands, and highest with the bullet seated to the lands. Loading longer and reducing the jump to the lands can result in higher pressures.
 
There is a minimum overall length because going shorter than that is supposed to increase pressures. That effect supposedly has nothing to do with the jump to the lands. There shouldn't be any reason to go shorter anyway so I am curious as to why you would want to.
