I'm loading Black powder in my 45-70 Sharps ,using a 535gr.postell bullet . Everything I've read stresses a compatable bullet lube for use with black powder, mainly a beeswax, crisco,or olive oil combo. I'm having some trouble feeding this stuff thru a lube-sizer,does anyone have a recipe that they find works good.
Also having some trouble finding a local supply of bee's wax, besides overpriced candles, I read somewhere of someone using a wax seal for toilets,is this actually bee's-wax and does it work?
Is all this effort really worth it ,or would buying a few sticks of S.P.G. lube be the way to go
new to blackpowder cartridge and having a blast

bullet lube

Bee keepers are your best source , but if there are none in your area try craft stores, they often carry candle making supplies, and or may be able to tell you where to try . I've used a beeswax and crisco mix for many years and it works just fine. The easiest and fastest way to use it is to melt the lube and dip the bullets into it with pliers , the excess will shave off when you push them into the case.

I use 50-50 mix of beeswax and bear grease. I think that SPG and Paul Mathews lube both very similar and think that both use beeswax and animal grease of some kind plus a dab of wintergreen or something to make them smell nice. I found the brown RCBS lube with alox worked but not as good as what I use now and did not work well in hot weather.
I rub the lube on with my fingers then run through the sizing die.
It is also important to have a blow tube and blow down the barrel (from the breach) between shots, to soften the fouling.

I have used a beeswax /murphies oil mix. I melt the beeswax and add Murphies oil then let it cool. It should be just harder than butter from the fridge. If it is too runny, reheat and add a bit of wax.
I use a hair dryer on the lube sizer to keep this stuff hot enough to coat bullets, the other way is to make it a bit harder, melt it in a shallow pan and place the bullets in the wax, let it cool and use a fired expanded 45 / 70 brass to cut them out of the wax.

I use SPG lube in my 45-90 Shiloh Sharps cartridges.
I have found a load this rifle likes, and it can shoot groups less than 1.5" consistantly now.
Mooncoon is right, you either have to blowtube, or wipe between shots.
I get good reults either way, but when blowtubing you have to shoot a bit quicker before the fouling dries out.
Here is my best group so far @ 100 yards with the top rifle.
