Bullet lube forum

What do you guys think of this idea? 50/50 TC Borebutter and Bees Wax.

Here is my dilemma.

I cast up 177 TC Maxi-Ball and now need to lube them. At first I thought get a tube of Bore Butter (that's what TC uses), melt it, pour it around standing boolits, then cut them out with a 50cal casing. I had no idea how soft Bore Butter actually is. Concept works but is extremely messy. Also, my tube of Bore Butter isn't going to go very far.

I'd really like a lube that is a little more stiff, and less messy to handle at room temperature.

Can I just cut the Bore Butter with 50% bees wax?

Keep in mind these boolits are for a BP rifle.

Thoughts?

Necessity is the mother of invention. Try a small amount and report back if you get some leading.

I don't think leading is the concern with this application. Has more to do with keeping the BP fouling soft enough to reload a few times with out having to swab the bore.

Follow up.

I mixed up a batch 1/3 TC Borebutter, 2/3 Bees Wax. Those were the portions I needed in order to make a lube batch big enough to lube all of my boolits.

Seems to have worked well. Lube was still pretty soft, but hard enough you could handle the boolits with out disturbing the lube on the boolits and get all buttered up in the process.

I'm rather please:)

"MONTEY'S Butter" bullet lube ;)

LOL - "MONTEY'S BOOLIT BUTTER" I like that! Smells like tooth paste to boot:rolleyes:

Come Nov, if I discover I have to pound those boolits down the bore I'll be denying any connection to that recipe.

I compete in the frontier cartridge class for CAS, which for those not into cowboy action, is black powder for everything. The lube recipe that I've been using for the past few years is from a guy who goes by the name of #### Dastardly, and who sells CAS-specific bullet molds from his website, biglube.com. Recipe as follows;

Equal parts, by weight:

Crisco
Soy Wax (craft stores like Michaels sell it)
wax toilet bowl rings

heat in a double boiler until melted, then pour into your lubrisizer, or pans.

I've used it for both lubrisizer and pan lube applications, and it works great for both, although it's a bit gooey through the lubrisizer, and I've had some success with adding a bit of beeswax to the mix to tighten it up. I use this recipe for my main match guns(pistols and rifle- 44-40), and my BPCR 45-70. It keeps the fouling soft, and I've run up to 200rds through my lever gun without ever having to stop and clean it.

Just another one of the hundreds of recipes out there.

Anyone have a lube recipe that is a mix of bees wax and heavy duty gear oil?

Looking to make lube sticks for my lube/sizer. End application is handgun bullets.

Trial and terror, melt the wax of a known amount add your oil/oil additives or grease also in a know amount let cool and see. Been playing around with recipes myself. Some times a squirt is to much. Some greases have to be melted first. Be prepared for stinky smells.
Good luck

I have used the same simple recipe for years, and it seems to work on everything from black powder loads to full gas-checked smokeless loads.

1 pound paraffin
1 bottle Vaseline
1/2 bottle Lee Liquid Alox.

I'd love to try beeswax, but I haven't seen the need to switch anything in my own recipe, and it's cheap as dirt.

I'm going to try this with bees wax. What do you mean by a bottle of Vaseline? I have never seen a bottle of Vaseline, only tubes and small tubs?

First kick at the can didn't pan out. Too sticky. Couldn't get it out of my lube mold. Would probably work ok as a pan lube?

2 parts bees wax, 1 part Vaseline, 1/2 part liquid Alox. I'll have to re-melt it and add more bees wax I guess.

Will leave it in my melting container to solidify this time to see how it sets up rather than attempt my mold again.

IF you can, throw it in the fridge or freezer for an hour before you try to remove it from the mold. And like Yomomma said, adding some paraffin will stiffen it up nicely.

Ya, I put it in the freezer for a couple hours, then put the mold in a vice and tried hammering the stuff out with wood dowel.
Ain't coming out of the mold with out re-melting it.

I'll try adding 1 part paraffin next.

Thanks,

M

UPDATE:

Attempted to melt out the lube in my lube molds and where the two were touching each other melted!!!!!

BURNTTUBES.jpg

The smoke that came pouring out of the microwave made my eyes water. The whole kitchen stinks.

Good thing I have the rest of the day to air it out before the wife comes home:redface:

Ouch. Try hot water in a disposable container. Skim the melted lube off the surface, toss the container when you're done because cleaning is a pain.

I've microwaved liquid alox to make it pourable and melted the top off the bottle while the bottom is still cold. Now I just the bottle in a margarine dish full of hot water and leave it for a while.

Well.... after much putzin around and a few oops, I finally got something that looks like a lube stick.

LUBE.JPG

Ended up going 2 parts bees wax, 1 part paraffin, 1 part Vaseline, 1/2 part liquid alox?

This time I sprayed the lube mold with pam. The mold just pulled off the lube slick as can be.

The little ones in the pic were from an attempt to pour into paper luney coin wraps. The mess on the top of my mold block attests to how successful that wasn't. You could probably make them work if you REALLY wanted to.

The lube still feels a little soft. May have to drop the bees wax?

Won't attempt more until I see how it performs in my lube/sizer and 38spl loads.

Trial and terror, good work, hope it shoots to your likeing.
my last experiment.
Just playing with small batches over a tealight type sauce warmer
1 tablespoon moly grease, wurth brand.
1.5 oz bees wax.
1 tablespoon black kiwi shoe polish
melted together and let it reduce a bit till i got the best texture for me is soft soild and sticky, but not to sticky that is a mess to use and i can apply it by hand. I tryed paraffin too it made the batch to hard and would not stick in the lube grooves. Hoping to try it this weekend. This stuff really stinks like bad! I bet it will work very well.

50 Cal Maxi-Ball Boolits

This thread is tooo slow, so I'll throw this in for your entertainment.

Pan Lubing 50 Cal Maxi-balls. The lube cutter is something I turned on my mini-lathe. It cuts two maxi's at a time.

I ran out of my bees wax / Bore butter lube and had to improvise with bees wax / Vaseline on the fly, hence the white layer.
