If I see anybody wearing a bullet resistant vest in an IPSC match, or any shooting match. unless they are LE and wearing their duty gear, I would stay away from them as these guys are certified nutbars who forgot to take their medication.

So I suspect this would be how most non shooters would feel about CCW in Canada.

IMHO, I think a shooting range is an excellent place to wear a vest. I'd pay it no more mind than shooting glasses.

I think it is a safe idea. Why not? Of course on a 33 degree day in the summer, you may regret it...but it comes off just as easy!

I thought the guys with kneepads were over the top.

wtf is wrong with someone wanting to wear a vest? How is it any different than the guys wearing tac gear when they shoot? How is it any different than hunter bob in his flaming orange?

Hunter Bob is required by law to wear orange. It might keep him from being shot by a negligent hunter in an uncontrolled situation. If there is a real need for a vest on a range, there are serious problems with range management. There are demonstrable reasons for eye and hearing protection which are unrelated to carelessness, negligence, etc.
Camouflage, tactical gear, etc. may be useful under certain circumstances. If someone wants to dress up, I suppose that is their business. Different people like to dress up in all sorts of outfits. Wearing a vest at an organized shooting event could be sending a message. It could imply that the wearer thinks that the range is not a safe place for a recreational activity. There have been discussions here about image and the public perception of the shooting sports.

IPSC Rules
5.3 Appropriate Dress
5.3.1 The use of camouflage or other similar types of military or police garments is discouraged. The exception is
competitors who are law enforcement or military personnel. The Match Director will be the final authority in
respect of what garments competitors are allowed to wear.

whatever somebody wants to wear when not playing the game is their choice I guess

I was at an IPSC shoot at the Sharon Club in Ontario in 1992 or '93. It was being covered by a TV station. The cameraman was wandering around in full body armour, like what the bomb cops wear. He was absolutely TERRIFIED!!! He was sure he was going to get shot and die any second. (No he was never down range he was standing on top of the berms or behind the line). I never saw anything on TV but I am sure his state of fright coloured any commentary to show IPSC in an negative way.

One of action shooting (heck any shooting disipline) most precious attributes is our SAFETY RECORD. I always wondered why no one ever kept a round count at a match. Factorys post "758 days without an accident". I think that would be an impressive statistic for a home page "10,000,000 rounds fired without an accident"

If somebody wants to dress up or wear duty gear fine. Thats part of the experience. If someone would be more comfortable wearing one fine but please don't make a big deal about it. Perception IS reality. We don't need to give the anti's another club to beat us with. Especially when the accident rate is so small.

Never seen ricochet myself. Ive seen light 9mm rounds bounce back off of bowling pins though. Shoot heavy bullets... In Ontario all steel must be in a shroud to prevent ricochets. A

It's not.

We strongly discourage that as well. (Except at 3 gun shoots, where it's harder to carry all of your gear on your belt)

I wear an "under the shirt vest" at all our matches. Why? Because of ricochets. Our range is an outdoor range and yes, occassinally bullets or pieces of them have come back, once cutting a shooters lip. That is the reason we where eye protection, and if there is any opportunity, rare as it is for either an accident or a ricohet wearing a vest if you have one kind of makes sense.

We also have un-superivesed shooting with no RO in attendnece.

No accidents to date and hopefully none will occur. I just don't want to be the first!

As for the para military crowd, just isn't me. The only reason why I wear it is for safety...mine.

Take Care

Bob

So you wear an under the shirt vest cuz someone got a cut lip?

Maybe you want a bullet proof ski mask.......:p

Lay off the poor guy. If he wants to wear a vest, and the match director is OK with it, then have at 'er. It's completely harmless, and gives him some peace of mind - I've been thumped pretty hard by bounce-backs, never cut or injured (and never seen or heard of an injury past a scrape or welt) but bounce-backs do happen.
