So as not to hijack bullet failed thread. How many bullets have you recovered from game. I know guys that have small jars full. Think I have 6 from moose so les than 10%, zero from deer or bears so counting them its like 7%. Most are through and through heart lung shots and a couple of head shots. One of my old partners told me to stop aiming between the ribs:ar15:

It's funny but most of our recovered bullets are mono-metal or bonded bullets. I think that is because we tend take raking shots with them that we usually avoid with cup & core bullets.

0%

Primarily focused on WT Deer in SW Ont., all shots within 200 yards, primarily broadside or quartering, over 20 years of hunting.

Been using a 30-06 with 150gr partitions.

A good bullet will be against the hide on the opposite side always. That mean it was designed to stop there and ALL of the energy that the bullet had was left in the animal to do its job. Any reading you do about bullets and hunting the author will say "found the bullet against the hide opposite side of the shot and it more than doubled in size and retained most of its weight. Of all the deer, moose, bear and elk I've shot I've recovered probably 90% of my bullets.

Wow Bill that seems a very high Percentage of bullets recovered! What bullets are you using? I’m only curious because I’ve only ever recovered one bullet.

My only recovery out of big game animal was a 50gr TSX fired into a whitetail at about 125yrds. It was a follow up shot attempting to anchor the deer as it ran away after a lung shot. The bullet entered just left of the right rear quarter and was under the hide at the front of the chest. Recovered weight was 50gr

Probably less than 10% recovery for me, I've only ever used cup and core, flat base bullets for big game, hotcor, interlock, corlokt, powerpoints ECT. I try to take double lung shots whenever possible. I prefer an exit so stay with heavy for caliber bullets.

That works out for someone who is only hunting one species when he sets out and matches the bullet accordingly. At one point this year, I had tags for 4 different big game species that I could have encountered at any time. In that case I match my bullet choice to the toughest animal I may encounter. My moose bullet is not going to be stopping on the far side hide of a whitetail no matter how well its constructed.

I've shot over 250 big game animals and maybe recovered a portion of 2 or 3 bullets; most passed through. My main objective after the kill is to cool the meat down by skinning and gutting the animal ASAP, not dig around looking for a bullet.

Recovered plenty of bullets from moose, their thick hide is hard to penetrate on the opposite side once that bullet has mushroomed and become blunt. It always made me happy because most moose usually drop or go no more than a couple yards. Not always does it stop in the hide for me but id go as much as 60 percent(moose). This with various calibres and various bullet types. Never got onto the monolithic train, had a few buddies with poor results and i've always been content with those results. Now with said, black bears i dont think i"ve ever recovered a bullet from.

MAYBE 10% but most likely closer too 5% recovery for me.
That includes cup and core, mono metal, lead cast and and round ball.
Ranges were from less than 20 yards to further than I care to post up .
Most were between 75 and 150 yards
