Bullet tip

I apologize in advance if this has been covered, I tried searching but could not find any thing.

My question has to do with the bullet tip. My reloading manual does not show any difference between a RN or PSP. It only offers loads by bullet composition like jacketed or lead or fMJ and Weight. Is it safe to use the recommended loads with any type of bullet tip?

Just start at the recommended starting load for that bullet weight, and move up slowly.

If there is no recommended starting load start 10 percent lower than the load listed.

Bullet weight is more critical than the shape when it comes to loading safety. When you change bullet shapes however, you might have to adjust your bullet seater. If the bullet weight is the same and you use the same seating depth, you can cause overpressure. IE if you push a pointed bullet to obtain the same cartridge OAL as a blunt/flat point bullet, it will push the bullet's base further into the case reducing its capacity. Pressure can then go up dramatically.

As well, some bullets will have a greater bearing surface than others which can increase/decrease pressures.

Malice made a great point about changing types. A load worked up to max with Hornady 150gr Amax might be unsafe with a RN Sierra 150gr so always back off powder when changing any one of the components.
