Bullet velocities in M14 and chopped M14

I have been messing around a lot with my chronograph this winter, catching up on a lot of loads and their velocities. It has generated some interesting data. While I was at it I thought I would check out the velocity differentiation between a standard barreled M14 and a chopped M14.
I used 44.6 grs of 748 with a CCI LR primer; FC cases and a 147 gr. WW fmj. This load was used in both rifles.
The stock M14 with a 22 inch barrel had an average velocity of 2638 fps (not corrected to muzzle so a little higher than that).
The M14 Doc chopped rifle (18.5 inch barrel) averaged 2520 fps (again not corrected to the muzzle).
The only variable I couldn't control was the barrels. One was a Norinco and the other a USGI. Don't know how much of a factor that was but I think it's close to the 40 fps velocity loss I was told to expect. I guess I should have shot the same rifle before and after the barrel was chopped but didn't think of it at the time.
A difference of 118 fps for anyone who was wondering.

Any change in accuracy? Was it the standard barrel chopped to 18.5 or was the barrel replaced with a heavy 18.5" barrel? I've been thinking about doing that to one of mine.

Thanks for passing the info along!

Well I can't honestly answer that as as soon as I got the Polytech I sent it straight to the M14 Doc. Never fired a round prior to him shortening the barrel and working his magic. I can say that both rifles are very accurate and Thomas work made them more so.

It was a standard M305 Norinco barrel that was shortened, Vortec muzzle brake installed.

It is a copy of a m-14 in .308 calibre.
The two Chinese companies are making them are Norinco and Polytech and they call them a M-305 . Check out the stickies and threads in the main battle rifle section for more info as there is lots there.
The first one has had the barrel cut shorter and a different front flash eliminator and front sight added .
As well it has a different hanguard to mount the eotech sight.

The Chinese like to combine different common things.

So how does this rifle show itself? What is the optimal shot distance?

That's an oxymoron. And both rifles pictured above are the same. But different...

It shows similarly to the American Springfield M1a battle rifle, but with obvious Chinese manufacture. "Optimal range" is approx. 100-250m...
