I just got a new AR (thanks to Gunnar) and I thought I would find out what others are shooting from the 1 in 7" ARs. The barrel lenght is 16" and it is a LMT.

My old AR was 1 in 9" and shot 55gr just fine, but I think I might need a heavier bullet (62gr???) in the 1 in 7"

Any help would be appreciated

The LMT 1/7" barrels shoot everything from 55 grain and up well ...they really seem to like the 77 grain SMK , I had good luck with 75 grain Hornady as well ...

You can possibly order it from P&D in Edmonton or Milarm(I am sure they will have something in the 69 and up to 77gr). I am sure 40rds is going to break you when it comes to shipping, plus 223 is light weight.
This poses a question from my end, why does my Colt HBAR 1-7 not like heavy stuff but shoots like ahouse on fire with light stuff? Anyone?

Fellers, I run the 77gr. Sierra Match Kings in my AR15 and my HK SL8. They group reasonably well and you buy them in bulk! Sweet!

How many come in a box? 500? I think it cost 150 bucks/box... I bought a whole bunch from the fellers at P&D ages ago and I am still working on them.

Try as I might, I can't get those damned A-Max's to work in my guns and it is driving me nuts - everyone else seems to shoot those things into microscopic groups with ease. Last time I went out with them I was reduced to a gibbering sobbing wretch because of it! My groups looked like long-range shotgun patterns.

This sport really blows sometimes.

A 1 in 7 twist will stabilize 90g bullets if you so choose. A Berger 90g vld for example. Be sure to use a mag follower in order to single load so you can seat the bullets out to the lands to maximize your accuracy. Most major retailers are stocking these bullets now. Wholesale, Russel's Sports and I'm sure P&d Enterprises to name a few. As for those of you not having good performance with the heavier bullets in your fast twist barrels, take a second look at your choice of powder as incorrect powder used in semi autos will affect the port pressure which in turn will affect accuracy. There is plenty of literature out there explaining this. Enjoy your AR!

I have three Colts 1:7 barrels (well counting the Colt Canada barrel on the Knight's, that's four:p)., that all shoot very well with the heavy stuff.

I did have problems with a 6920 that I have when I first bought it (used off of the board) - the barrel was heavily fouled and needed a real good scrub with JB bore past to clean it up.

As already stated, powder choice can make a difference.

The A-Max, like alot of 'VLD' type bullets have a 'secant' ogive. This improves their downrange ballistic performance, but also can be a bit difficult to get to shoot well at mag loading lengths. This percieved poor performance is due to the unforgiving nature of the bullet design not liking the jump the bullet takes to the rifling. Most that shoot well are doing so with very travel in the freebore, and some are being loaded into the lands.

In my 1:7 Lmt I use American Eagle 55s, Win White box 55s, Federal 62s. Basically whatever is cheap.

My preference for hoarding type ammo would be 77 Hornady TAP. But thats just for hoarding.

what ever is cheapest! I would rather shoot 1000 55 or 62 gr's the 400 77gr's lol

I use my AR for 100 meters and in in Tac Carbine matches and three gun so paper dont know what grain of bullet it is!

if I was shooting people then I would care;)

My 1-7 LMT 16" hates HATES! 55g...3-4" groups at 100. I am shooting 68g at the moment with Varget and getting decent groups. I tried a few 75g (A-max I think they were not mag loadable) and they seemed to be very very accurate. So my gun seems to like the heavier bullets overall.

Have you compared that same 55grain ammo in another rifle to come to the conclusion that it is the rifle not liking the ammo, and not that the ammo is crap in the first place?

I've got an older SP1 with a 1:12twist and a 14" carbine with a 1:9 so I just use 55 gr in both as I don't reload .223/ 5.56. Works well in both.

I tried several different 55g ammo both off the shelf and home rolled (3 types of powder 4 types of primers full workups on each and 3 different brands of bullets) all to much the same result. But no I did not compare the same ammo in another rifle. Next time I am at the range I will see if I can do that. But I am more concerned how my ammo shoots in my rifle to be honest. But would really like to shoot 55g if I can figure out the issue.
