Bullet weight?

I'm reloading (newbie) for a .300 savage and I'd like to narrow my bullet weight down to one size for both caribou and moose, since between my wife and I, we hunt both on an annual basis. What would you guys suggest: 150g, 165g, or 180g? I think I'd like to stay as light as possible and still get the job done. Before I started reloading, I've never thought about weights much, just went into CT and bought whatever they had on the shelf. I've tried the 180gs already and whereas accuracy was pretty good, without even measuring I'm sure the velocity was pretty slow. I could load and try them all, but...what would you suggest?
 
I load for a friends 300 Savage and he doesn't care what I give him as long as it is a 180 grain Hornady SP. LoL ;)

He takes a moose and a deer every year with his '99 and the 180's. Last year we were together when he nailed a nice big-bodied mulie buck at close to 300 yards across a clear-cut. The lack of velocity doesn't sem to bother him too much. :D
 
moose/caribou load in a 300 Savage?? If it were me, I'd load a 165 gr Nosler Partition or 150 grain Barnes TSX. Powder to try first would be H4895
 
"...try them all..." Exactly. You'll have to work up a load for your rifle. It may like any one of your bullet weights or none at all. I suspect the 165 will be best though.

X2, stick to this idea unless you want to load two different loads, a light and a heavy.

Thanks for the input. I've tried the H4895 with 180G Nosler Silvertip. I can try the IMR4895 next with the 180. I guess I'm going to have to pick up some 150 and/or 165 bullets as well. And who was it said that I was going to save money by reloading????:) :) :p
 
I load 150 speer Grand Slams in my 308....about the same as a 300sav.

Those 150's have killed moose,elk,deer and the odd yotey.

The small case is not made for heavy bullets IMHO.

165 grain bullets are about optimum for the smaller 30's. Enough velocity to give them decent ranging qualities, and enough mass to let them penetrate good. For the 300 Sav to 30-06, they work pretty good, IMHO. Loaded for a buddy with IMR4064 and the Hornady 165 BTSP. His daughter and sons all killed deer and moose with them. As with any other rifle/cartridge combo === shot placement is the key.
 
Another vote for the 165 grain Partition, only I would use Reloder 15 behind mine. My 300 Kills 'em dead with that load. (and the 150 Partition, too) Regards, Eagleye.
 
I load 150gr Accubonds infront of 41.0gr of IMR 4895. The deer I have shot with this load never had time to complain. My limit with this load is 250 yards.
now for moose I might try the 165s, I have heard alot of people like them and you get good accuracy with a fairly good velocity out of them.

I was using 150 gr partitions and found I got a little better accuracy with the accubonds but really I was just splitting hairs. They both shoot great groups out of my 99.

That's it I am ordering up some 165 accubonds right now!!!!
