Bullets for Binos' aims to turn B.C. grizzly hunters into heroes
'The optics of grizzly hunting aren't good. It's not in line with British Columbia's general tourism image'

By Karin Larsen, CBC News Posted: May 10, 2017 3:13 PM PT Last Updated: May 11, 2017 7:42 AM PT

Two exclusive British Columbia resorts have been quietly offering grizzly hunters free stays but only if they agree to put down their guns.

The campaign, called "'Bullets for Binos," the short form for binoculars, was started by the Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort on B.C.'s Central Coast in 2015.

Hunters who hand in a grizzly "tag" or hunting permit, and who sign an agreement to never hunt grizzlies again receive an $11,000 three-night grizzly viewing package for two in exchange.

"Our owner-operators, Fraser and Becky Murray, work closely with conservation foundations around the Broughton Archipelago and they saw a lot of amazing work being done to try and stop the trophy hunt," said Nimmo Bay guest co-ordinator Brianna Sloan.

"Nimmo Bay is uniquely positioned in grizzly bear territory and in hunting territory and they thought, 'What can we do?' That's how they came up with Bullets for Binos."
'What can we do?'

Grizzly tags are won through a twice-a-year limited entry hunt lottery. If selected, a B.C. resident pays $80 for a grizzly tag, while non-B.C. residents are charged $1,030 each. First Nations hunters do not require tags.

Sloan says two hunters exchanged their tags for grizzly viewing packages last year. Another five grizzly tags have been handed in, and those trips are in the process of being scheduled.

Tweedsmuir Park Lodge near Bella Coola joined the Bullets for Binos program last year. So far, one hunter has exchanged a grizzly tag for a trip.
Message of conservation

"We didn't hesitate to jump on board," said Tweedsmuir director of sales Tim Wilkinson, noting the lodge is in the Great Bear Rainforest. "We've always been opposed to the trophy hunt — our message is one of conservation."

Like Nimmo Bay, wildlife viewing is one of Tweedsmuir's main attractions.

"Not to get political, [the program] is just saying to someone who kills bears that there is a better way. It's promoting bear viewing instead of hunting," said Livingston.

Neither Nimmo Bay Resort nor Tweedsmuir Lodge advertise the Bullets for Binos program, nor do they mention it on their websites.

"We're focusing on word of mouth on this," said Sloan. "I'm not really in touch with all the politics, I just know it's not something we're shouting to the heavens. We're happy if exposure comes our way but we're not out looking for it."
Grizzly hunt off brand

Sloan said they've received nothing but support for the program, especially from European visitors.

"The optics of grizzly bear hunting aren't good. It's just not in line with British Columbia's general tourism image and brand," she said.

Wilkinson says Bullets for Binos is just good business.

"You can look at the statistics and the facts: bear viewing just brings in so much more money to B.C.," he said.

"It's a renewable resource. It just makes so much sense."

i knew that were different in BC but that one wow .... but i think grizzly hunting will be soon a sign of the past with all the campaign with are getting against hunting them ...then hunt will be close for every species ... just a matter of time ...

Til grizzlies are in backyards eating pets and kids and being destroyed but RCMP with their 30 shot "patrol" carbines.......

I knew the guy that started that Nimmo Bay lodge when he was just trying to figure out how to get access to Crown land to set it up in 1975. He did and I presume made millions hosting people like Oprah, GW Bush, Pattison and many other super rich people. He's retired and passed it on to his kids.

A buddy of mine was up there as a sound tech for and episode of the TV show "Boston Legal" they shot there.

There are lots of griz up there at at Knight Inlet and it's in the lodge's economic interest to reduce the number of grizzly hunters by offering a "free" stay.

Hunters aren't turning in tags, people who apply and get awarded just for the sake of burning the tag are. This just seems like a stunt to get more people involved in this stupidity.

Well, it is in the Green PArties Platform....
They will turn it over to the Natives and then we will pay to hunt them.

If any of you hunters are considering this, please note that I will trade you your non res Gris tag for a $25,000 value sight seeing flight in a paint chipped Cessna (hey, if they can "value" their glorified bird watching hotel at $11k, I can get creative too).

I promise the tag will be put to good use!

Only province where the Greens have any clout. :(

Grizz

unfortunately BC is not the only province the greens have clout, it's coming to everyone's province and territory... The Anti's are very well funded and very organized.... we all must ready ourselves for a hell of a battle. It starts here and now with Grizzlies... then they will push on and attack every hunting and fishing freedom we hold dear...

Think next year I'll get my wife to apply for a Grizzly LEH in an undersubscribed MU, she has no desire to hunt bear, then I'll let you guys know how the free vacation was.

As the LEH allocations are based on harvest numbers the only thing this program may do is increase the number of tags available next year.

Yup. Drive the chance of success for a hunter getting a tag way down, and take a potentially large of chunk of tags out of contention b/c a non hunter got it. Even at $1030 for a non-resident, some will consider it pocket change. Others will band together and throw in $50 each and raise funds for one person to apply.

Bad ju-ju...

A few big issues with this story.

1) bear viewing brings in more cash due to numbers. On a per capita basis, hunters bring in way more money.

2) the simple presence of all of these people is not a good thing for the bears or their environment. people have to get into remote places, which costs a lot of gas. Then they bring garbage with them, ect.

If the hippies really want to make an impact, then they have to stop going to watch the bears, as their environmental footprint is collectively much bigger than hunters.

If nothing else very creative. I could careless what someone else does with there property (a bear tag),
