bullets for coyote

This one could as easily be in the hunting forum I'm sure but here goes anyway. I am considering loading a light bullet for off season coyote hunting on the farm, it will be loaded in a 30.06. I'm currently looking at the 110grain offering from Hornady I want to go with a light for caliber bullet to avoid excessive pelt damage as my mother wants the hides for tanning to use to make mukluks. Advice or input for light for caliber or varmint bullets for this purpose?
 
Take pictures. I am going to load up some 110vmax in 308 to try out, but not because I think they will be fur friendly.........
I could be wrong though.
 
I think you would be farther ahead to load heavier/thicker jacketed bullets if you want to be fur friendly. I have shot coyotes with my 30-06 using 150/165/180 grain bullets with minimal pelt damage
 
Use moose bullets in your 30-06 unless you think you need to be a speed freak. Heavy bullets don't wreck the pelt because they generally don't open up just pass through. It bugs me when people talk about a coyote rifle and pelt damage. I use my 7mm for all coyotes and have wrecked less than 5% of the coyotes. Using your regular deer rifle with your regular load keeps your skills in excellent shape. You stay familiar.
 
Back in the days when coyote pelts were worth serious money, most of the guys hunting them were using FMJ. You don't want a light varmint bullet if you're trying to save the fur.
 
110's are M1 Carbine bullets. Don't even think about V-Max, HP, SP or the RNSP. Big hole makers. (A 110 HP out of .30 Carbine makes a hole the size of a grape fruit in a ground hog.) The FMJ's will do nicely though. If you insist on using a .30-06. You have anything smaller?
Check your local hunting regs about FMJ's for hide hunting. You may not have the option for them. AB doesn't allow 'em for deer at least. Assuming your name indicates where you are.
 
Don't bet on TSXs saving your bacon........er hides for you. Also bear in mind that fur buyers have a completely different idea of what damage is. You could kill a coyote by lethal injection and he'd ##### about the needle hole. Snare it and a few broken guard-hairs will be his complaint. Raise it from a pup with a bottle and scare it to death and it will be un-prime or springy.



 
I have loaded 110 grain Speer SP's in .308 and they turn coyotes into bite sized pieces. I am certain that a .30-06 would be no different. If I were saving pelts, then I would suggest heavier bullets.

Agreed. The proper tool for the job is a better goal. A .22 cal. center fire is what you really need.

But if you must, just use your deer load for the '06. There is no way to make a .30-06 into a fur friendly coyote round, so just live with the fact that coyotes will be dead and a bit messy. They WILL be dead, and that is the first goal.
 
I would love to buy a new coyote gun unfortunately for me the next new rifle in my safe won't be mine. It will be a rascal for my son
 
Try a Hornady Interlock, I use them in my 7-08 and as long as you don't hit any bone they pass thru clean and turn the insides into a soupy jello like consistency... The problem arises when bone is hit it tends to travel thru the pelt on yote's and leave a crater... The interlocks are cheap and work on just about any critter up to elk so win-win.
