hello im getting a load together for going after coyotes this season and have my match gun that is a .223 i normally shoot 75gr amax and im looking for other projectiles hornady has been a great brand so far i also have some 75gr hornady bthp match rounds and some 60 grain soft points what would you guys suggest? i have shot the 75s out to 600m but would be keeping the engagment to about 300m for effective kills. thanks
 
I get 90 dogs a season...myself i use 50 grain sierra blitzking! I keep the hides averaged $98 bucks a hide on last february sale,first sale is always the best one,Pin hole entry and no exits thats what i aim for! Blitzking gets er done, By far the best iv tried!! Most dogs get shot at 100-200 yards...But have no problem with going to 400 yards and they go over! 22-250 and 220 swift.......
 
The 75 A-Max will kill them for sure, but it is no longer recommended for hunting by Hornady... In testing the bullet often fails to come apart and causes minimal damage in comparison to other more frangible designs... Fortunately the Hornady V-Max or Z-Max series offer similar designs with an appropiate degree of frangibility... I also use the Nosler BT Varmint line of bullets... I use both the V-Max and BT-V's out of .204 Ruger, .220 Swift, .22 CHeetah, .22 BR Reminton, .22 K-Hornet, .223, .222 Rem Mag, .22/250 and also in .243 Win, 6mm Rem and .25/06... I have a bit of a thing for .22 centerfires... And a few others. ;-)
 
I used to use the 75 grain BTHP Match in a fast twist 22/250 on coyotes. Worked fine, and laughed at wind but you are going to get 2 holes in every yote if that matters to you. There is no advantage to the heavy bullets at 300 yards though.

My hands down favorite hide bullet for both the .223 and 22/250 is the 52 grain Berger Varmint Match. The 52 grain Speer is a cult classic hide bullet if it shoots for you.

I have a few 9 twist guns and have never gotten reliable performance from 75/80 grain loads... My best 9 twist bullets have been the 60 V-Max and the 68 BTHP... If you are considering both the A-Max AND BTHP, IMO go with the latter.
 
Any match type bullets will seem to go right through the coyote, they dont really expand at all and not reccomended for hunting, any soft point or polymer tip works well, ive got my 65 grn gameking and 55 grn varment grenades loaded up in my .223 for me

I've had great luck with the 53 grain V-max as well in terms if accuracy in my 1:9 twist Savage. They also have a decent BC. My only complaint is that I get quite a few exit holes, but is does flatten them well. I've shot about 20 and had not so much as a twitch out of them never mind a follow up shot. I don't however take pot shots at them and usually hit them nice and square.

Never had one exit even at 25 yards. Mine are traveling at 3025 fps
 
I always liked Hornady's 50-55gr SX in a rem 700-788 but with the new 1-9 twist these days the bullets would turn to dust before making it 100 yards.They were not recommended in a mini-14 with it's 1-10 as it was to fast.Great bullet though.Harold
