I moved my VFG out almost to the end of my handguards, having initially tried to use my C7 with a magwell grip, a couple of instructors on my infantry course suggested trying to get your forearm as far as possible, same advice I found on lightfighter as well in some VFG discussions there. I tried it myself and find much more comfortable and with greater control over the muzzle. Which I suppose would explain the AUG grip as well. For something like the shorty T-97 you don't really have a hanguard that goes farther out, so the trigger guard makes sense.
With an AR I use the regular rifle grip for that (IE week hand out on the handguard in a conventional shooting manner), and the magwell for very close only. I find I'm faster with the magwell over the conventional way and even with a VG, although you do lose stability. Speed vs Accuracy when you gain one, you usually lose some of the other.
With the AUG you don't really have a stock forend to shoot it like a conventional rifle since it goes to barrel almost immediately after the handguard. With the Tavor for instance you have the small front handguard so you can also shoot it in a conventional manner.
Also keep in mind, I'm just screwing around on my own time and with Semi auto and non combat practice. These have been my preferences from my experiences. Which obviously aren't as good as having infantry training. Also the goals/needs are a heck of a lot different. I'm a hack and well aware of it.
I think a comparison here, would be the use of the slide lever on a pistol. In the RCMP we don't use it. We use the clamshell grip to rack the pistol. However the slide release lever is faster and most prefer it. Our training is geared for police use. Which has to consider factors such as fine motor skills going to crap, you might be wearing gloves, or your hands might be covered with blood. My point here is that other variables were at work for the intended purpose which dictated how we were trained.
On a side note I've always been a fan of the AUG. It really was a rifle far ahead of it's time. If they weren't prohibited I'd definitely own one.
