Bunny Slayer of Choice

For many years i used my 12 ga. 870 Wingmaster on cottontails in front of beages, until one day I received a free .410 single shot beater. To my surprise I was shooting just as well, or better, with the .410 and burning through less ammo. So nowadays I use the .410 on cottontails and a Ruger 10/22 on snowshoe hares.

Springfield M6, because it's what I usually have with me as it's so light and small, and gives me .410 and .22LR. Also have used a CZ .452 Varmint (below, with Mark 4 M1 Leupold glass is worth 4 times the rifle, talk about overkill), and a CZ 452 Lux.

Our local bunnies feast on blueberries and other fruit....this makes them overly large, very aggressive, and most of the time quite horny !
This may sound like over-kill, but nothing makes me feel more comfortable in bunny country than my 404 Jeffery with a 350 gr. Woodleigh load.
My second choice is my 788 Rem in 17 cal. with old dependable 25 gr. Hornady HP @ 4000+ fps.

If I'm hunting rabbits, it's likely snow shoe rabbits which means I've already got my mule deer, so I've put away my '06 and I'm packing my ruger m77 22 bolt action with an inexpensive 4X Bushnell. I'm also looking for grouse. On the other hand, if I'm still looking for a mulie, I keep the anschutz junior handy. It fits in the the soft shell "trunk" of the quad or on top of my fanny pack. Rabbits are a critter of opportunity and a bonus for dinner.

For Cottontails ... my first was a Stevens 311 - 20ga barrels shortened to 20"
with no choke ... very fast, very effective with a load of 5's or 6's.

For Jacks ... either a Mod. 61 - 22 LR Winchester pump or a Model 12 -12ga
with 1-1/4 oz. of 2's

For Snowshoes ... a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag with 240 gr. cast bullets (429421) ahead of 8.0 gr. of Unique.
