Looking at a used Burris 20-60x80 Landmark Straight Spotting Scope for sale locally for $170. Can someone comment on the quality of these? I own a bushnell elite 15-45x60 that I use for hiking but I am looking for something bigger to have set up at camp ect.

I had one, not bad under ideal conditions, terrible if conditions change.
I bought a high powered Celestron, tell you the truth, it's not much better at twice the price.

The economy scopes lack the lens quality and coatings required.

Having said that, I still use the Celestron, I just understand and accept the limitations.

Please don't waste your money.

I know it's hard to not buy when you see a low price like that and it seems to look like it's a good deal. But when it comes to optics, especially optics that range out to that sort of magnification, your going to want to save your money and get a good spotting scope. Nikon maybe around $700-800. I made the mistakes of getting the cheaper ones. It's just not worth it. You will want to sell it and you WILL want to get a better quality one once you look down the lens of a under $300 spotting scope.

This isn't elitism. It's just fact. Try and save an get one that you can truly enjoy and say is doing everything you want from it. Zeiss also make some amazing spotting scopes. Shop around and do your research. You will thank yourself when you are able to see clear crisp images at 60X magnification. :)

Just my two!

I think I already knew the answer but thanks for confirming. I will save and get something higher quality

Correct. The higher the magnification the better quality you need. At the higher end of its magnification that Burris would disappoint you after the Elite.

Funny you should bring up Burris scopes. I lost a spotting scope in the crawl space of our old house a couple years ago. They were doing renovations, to which we still have contact with them and they found the scope. Myself and two buddies went shooting two weeks ago and figured we would try this lost gem out, well let me tell you that we couldn't see ANYTHING. It was in good condition, no scratches etc, and the optical quality at 40x let along 60x compared to my Sightron S3 was abismal. Instead of selling it on the cheap on the EE, it met the wrong end of a 308 at 100yards that day. May it RIP!!

The high price of quality optics in the upper magnification ranges is an unfortunate barrier to entry for many shooters, but it is imminently true that you get what you pay for.

My personal experience is that there is a price break around $700, where above said break the performance and quality of the experience increases proportionally with the price, and below that break the quality and performance decreases much faster than that. Depending on the user's expectation, there will be a line below which the optic just isn't worth buying at all.
