Total noob here so go easy with me:rockOn:

I bought a Bushmaster A3 shorty 16'' and waiting for my transport licence. The rifle comes with a fixed stock but I plan to replace it with a Magpul CTR stock. What do I need beside the stock to complete the modification? I think I need a buffer tube but not sure. I heard that for this rifle, it's the milspec buffer tube, can anyone confirm?

Thanks!

Your best bet will be to get a collapsing stock from Questar, it will come with the buffertube you will need, and will have a stock while you wait to find a CTR stock. You need the nuts and stuff too, it is 89$ i think. Bushmasters use the commercial buffertubes.

The Magpul CTR stock is great. It comes in BOTH Milspec AND Commercial diameters. Now here's the hurdle, Magpul is wayyyyy behind in backordered goods (of all kinds) and their CTR stock is ITAR'ed (read: restricted and needs a zhitload of paperwork, correct me if I'm wrong) and as a result, the CTR's are tougher to come by. Complicate that supply problem with the choice and availability of either Milspec or Commercial diameter carbine buffer tubes. ;)

Jdman is correct. I would select that route of buying an $ 89.99 collapsing stock kit for Mark at www.shopquestar.com (board sponsor) and then finding a Magpul CTR (in the color you like) that will fit the commercial diameter of the 6 position carbine stock from Questar. Then you can always sell that plastic 6 position buttstock on the EE Forum..

Here's the link to the 6 Position stock: https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=256&bc=no

The above option would allow you to kit out your carbine buttstock with all the parts you need for the conversion. You will be good to go for the time being while you hunt around for the ever-so-scarce CTR stock. BTW, I'm going to use this approach, too. I like the Magpul CTR stock design, just enough LCV (look cool value) and still works well for Service Rifle competition. :D

Hope this helps...

Peace be to journey,
Barney

Yes they are behind. But they are only $97 (stock only) and everybody has been buying them from Brownells with no prob.
Brownells would not ship if they were not allowed. They have good stock on the MOE version, only $60.

I prefer VLTOR anyway. Much nicer stock for less.$$

parts

First you need to know what model stock you have mil-spec or commercial ,if milspec you need a milspec carbine buffer tube different dia then the
commercial. so if you have a commerical model just buy a stock from QUESTAR, you get all the parts you need, carbine buffer tube ,spring ,buffer, castle nut and end plate buy the stock wrench there too or the ar15 armorers tool off Marstar.
Cheers tornado

Good advice about Questar... To answer your question, here is what you need in terms of parts:

Buffer assembly (Carbine)
Buffer Spring (Carbine)
Carbine Receiver extension tube (6 pos. commercial size 1.17" OD)
Receiver extension nut
Collar buttstock tube lock/plate

Worth noting, Marks kit at Questar is only a few dollars more than buying the parts separately, AND you get a buttstock as well that you may be able to sell off...
